He lifts the weak from the dust; he raises the poor from the ash heap to seat them with princes and to bestow on them an honored position. The foundations of the earth belong to the LORD, and he has placed the world on them.

He abandoned the sanctuary at Shiloh, the tent where he lived among men.He allowed the symbol of his strong presence to be captured; he gave the symbol of his splendor into the hand of the enemy.He delivered his people over to the sword, and was angry with his chosen nation.Fire consumed their young men, and their virgins remained unmarried.Their priests fell by the sword, but their widows did not weep.But then the Lord awoke from his sleep; he was like a warrior in a drunken rage.He drove his enemies back; he made them a permanent target for insults.He rejected the tent of Joseph; he did not choose the tribe of Ephraim.He chose the tribe of Judah, and Mount Zion, which he loves.He made his sanctuary as enduring as the heavens above; as secure as the earth, which he established permanently.He chose David, his servant, and took him from the sheepfolds.He took him away from following the mother sheep, and made him the shepherd of Jacob, his people, and of Israel, his chosen nation.David cared for them with pure motives; he led them with skill.

O God, you have rejected us. You suddenly turned on us in your anger. Please restore us!You made the earth quake; you split it open. Repair its breaches, for it is ready to fall.You have made your people experience hard times; you have made us drink intoxicating wine.

In the past, when Saul was our king, you were the real leader in Israel. The LORD said to you,‘ You will shepherd my people Israel; you will rule over Israel.’”

The Son is the radiance of his glory and the representation of his essence, and he sustains all things by his powerful word, and so when he had accomplished cleansing for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high.

Look, the LORD is ready to devastate the earth and leave it in ruins; he will mar its surface and scatter its inhabitants.Everyone will suffer– the priest as well as the people, the master as well as the servant, the elegant lady as well as the female attendant, the seller as well as the buyer, the borrower as well as the lender, the creditor as well as the debtor.The earth will be completely devastated and thoroughly ransacked. For the LORD has decreed this judgment.The earth dries up and withers, the world shrivels up and withers; the prominent people of the earth fade away.The earth is defiled by its inhabitants, for they have violated laws, disregarded the regulation, and broken the permanent treaty.So a treaty curse devours the earth; its inhabitants pay for their guilt. This is why the inhabitants of the earth disappear, and are reduced to just a handful of people.The new wine dries up, the vines shrivel up, all those who like to celebrate groan.The happy sound of the tambourines stops, the revelry of those who celebrate comes to a halt, the happy sound of the harp ceases.They no longer sing and drink wine; the beer tastes bitter to those who drink it.The ruined town is shattered; all of the houses are shut up tight.They howl in the streets because of what happened to the wine; all joy turns to sorrow; celebrations disappear from the earth.The city is left in ruins; the gate is reduced to rubble.

This is what the LORD says:“ At the time I decide to show my favor, I will respond to you; in the day of deliverance I will help you; I will protect you and make you a covenant mediator for people, to rebuild the land and to reassign the desolate property.

Please forgive the sin of your servant, for the LORD will certainly establish the house of my lord, because my lord fights the battles of the LORD. May no evil be found in you all your days!

Now the Philistines were fighting against Israel. The men of Israel fled from the Philistines and many of them fell dead on Mount Gilboa.The Philistines stayed right on the heels of Saul and his sons. They struck down Saul’s sons Jonathan, Abinadab, and Malki-Shua.Saul himself was in the thick of the battle; the archers spotted him and wounded him severely.Saul said to his armor bearer,“ Draw your sword and stab me with it! Otherwise these uncircumcised people will come, stab me, and torture me.” But his armor bearer refused to do it, because he was very afraid. So Saul took his sword and fell on it.When his armor bearer saw that Saul was dead, he also fell on his own sword and died with him.So Saul, his three sons, his armor bearer, and all his men died together that day.When the men of Israel who were in the valley and across the Jordan saw that the men of Israel had fled and that Saul and his sons were dead, they abandoned the cities and fled. The Philistines came and occupied them.
