And while He was being accused by the chief priests and elders, He did not offer any answer.Then Pilate* said to Him,“ Do You not hear how many things they are testifying against You?”

“ You shall appoint for yourself judges and officers in all your towns which the Lord your God is giving you, according to your tribes, and they shall judge the people with righteous judgment.

And they* dressed Him in purple, and after twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on Him;and they began saluting Him:“ Hail, King of the Jews!”And they repeatedly beat His head with a reed and spit on Him, and kneeling, they bowed down before Him.

And they began to bring charges against Him, saying,“ We found this man misleading our nation and forbidding us to pay taxes to Caesar, and saying that He Himself is Christ, a King.”

In the same way the chief priests also, along with the scribes and elders, were mocking Him and saying,“ He saved others; He cannot save Himself! He is the King of Israel; let Him now come down from the cross, and we will believe in Him.

Now on the next day, that is, the day which is after the preparation, the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered together with Pilate,and they said,“ Sir, we remember that when that deceiver was still alive, He said,‘ After three days I am rising.’

Worthless fellows, even those without a name, They were cast out from the land.“ And now I have become their taunt, And I have become a byword to them.

but you have risen up against the Lord of heaven; and they have brought the vessels of His house before you, and you and your nobles, your wives, and your concubines have been drinking wine out of them; and you have praised the gods of silver and gold, of bronze, iron, wood, and stone, which do not see, nor hear, nor understand. But the God in whose hand are your life breath and all your ways, you have not glorified.

But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowds to ask for Barabbas, and to put Jesus to death.
