You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it; you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings.

For I desire mercy, not sacrifice, and acknowledgment of God rather than burnt offerings. (niv)

The Lord detests the sacrifice of the wicked, but the prayer of the upright pleases him. (niv)

“ The multitude of your sacrifices— what are they to me?” says the Lord.“ I have more than enough of burnt offerings, of rams and the fat of fattened animals; I have no pleasure in the blood of bulls and lambs and goats.When you come to appear before me, who has asked this of you, this trampling of my courts?Stop bringing meaningless offerings! Your incense is detestable to me. New Moons, Sabbaths and convocations— I cannot bear your worthless assemblies.Your New Moon feasts and your appointed festivals I hate with all my being. They have become a burden to me; I am weary of bearing them.When you spread out your hands in prayer, I hide my eyes from you; even when you offer many prayers, I am not listening. Yet you desired faithfulness even in the womb; you taught me wisdom in that secret place. (niv)

For when I brought your ancestors out of Egypt and spoke to them, I did not just give them commands about burnt offerings and sacrifices,but I gave them this command: Obey me, and I will be your God and you will be my people. Walk in obedience to all I command you, that it may go well with you. (niv)

The sacrifice of the wicked is detestable— how much more so when brought with evil intent! (niv)

But Samuel replied:“ Does the Lord delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the Lord? To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams. (niv)

“ I hate, I despise your religious festivals; your assemblies are a stench to me.Even though you bring me burnt offerings and grain offerings, I will not accept them. Though you bring choice fellowship offerings, I will have no regard for them.Away with the noise of your songs! I will not listen to the music of your harps. (niv)

I bring no charges against you concerning your sacrifices or concerning your burnt offerings, which are ever before me. (niv)

“‘ But anyone who sins defiantly, whether native- born or foreigner, blasphemes the Lord and must be cut off from the people of Israel.Because they have despised the Lord’s word and broken his commands, they must surely be cut off; their guilt remains on them.’” (niv)

“‘ Do not accept a ransom for the life of a murderer, who deserves to die. They are to be put to death. (niv)

“‘ But if just one person sins unintentionally, that person must bring a year- old female goat for a sin offering. (niv)

But if anyone schemes and kills someone deliberately, that person is to be taken from my altar and put to death. (niv)

“ When you tell them all this, they will not listen to you; when you call to them, they will not answer. (niv)

If a man is found sleeping with another man’s wife, both the man who slept with her and the woman must die. You must purge the evil from Israel. (niv)
