When Ahithophel realized that his advice had not been followed, he saddled his donkey, went to his hometown, set his affairs in order, and hanged himself. He died there and was buried in the family tomb.

When someone told David that his adviser Ahithophel was now backing Absalom, David prayed,“ O Lord, let Ahithophel give Absalom foolish advice!”

They say,“ Get an evil person to turn against him. Send an accuser to bring him to trial.When his case comes up for judgment, let him be pronounced guilty. Count his prayers as sins.Let his years be few; let someone else take his position.May his children become fatherless, and his wife a widow.May his children wander as beggars and be driven from their ruined homes.May creditors seize his entire estate, and strangers take all he has earned.Let no one be kind to him; let no one pity his fatherless children.May all his offspring die. May his family name be blotted out in the next generation.May the Lord never forget the sins of his fathers; may his mother’s sins never be erased from the record.May the Lord always remember these sins, and may his name disappear from human memory.For he refused all kindness to others; he persecuted the poor and needy, and he hounded the brokenhearted to death.He loved to curse others; now you curse him. He never blessed others; now don’t you bless him.Cursing is as natural to him as his clothing, or the water he drinks, or the rich food he eats.Now may his curses return and cling to him like clothing; may they be tied around him like a belt.”May those curses become the Lord’s punishment for my accusers who speak evil of me.

For the wisdom of this world is foolishness to God. As the Scriptures say,“ He traps the wise in the snare of their own cleverness.”

But they rebelled against him and grieved his Holy Spirit. So he became their enemy and fought against them.

Let my enemies be destroyed by the very evil they have planned for me.Let burning coals fall down on their heads. Let them be thrown into the fire or into watery pits from which they can’t escape.

Her oppressors have become her masters, and her enemies prosper, for the Lord has punished Jerusalem for her many sins. Her children have been captured and taken away to distant lands.

The time of Israel’s punishment has come; the day of payment is here. Soon Israel will know this all too well. Because of your great sin and hostility, you say,“ The prophets are crazy and the inspired men are fools!”

Bring disgrace and destruction on my accusers. Humiliate and shame those who want to harm me.

May those who rejoice at my troubles be humiliated and disgraced. May those who triumph over me be covered with shame and dishonor.

Rise up, O God, and scatter your enemies. Let those who hate God run for their lives.Blow them away like smoke. Melt them like wax in a fire. Let the wicked perish in the presence of God.

Listen, O heavens! Pay attention, earth! This is what the Lord says:“ The children I raised and cared for have rebelled against me.

So they impaled Haman on the pole he had set up for Mordecai, and the king’s anger subsided.

Because of the sinful things they say, because of the evil that is on their lips, let them be captured by their pride, their curses, and their lies.Destroy them in your anger! Wipe them out completely! Then the whole world will know that God reigns in Israel. Interlude

He frustrates the plans of schemers so the work of their hands will not succeed.He traps the wise in their own cleverness so their cunning schemes are thwarted.They find it is dark in the daytime, and they grope at noon as if it were night.

You will capture all your enemies. Your strong right hand will seize all who hate you.You will throw them in a flaming furnace when you appear. The Lord will consume them in his anger; fire will devour them.You will wipe their children from the face of the earth; they will never have descendants.

But we have sinned and done wrong. We have rebelled against you and scorned your commands and regulations.

But the king interrupted him and said,“ Since when have I made you the king’s counselor? Be quiet now before I have you killed!” So the prophet stopped with this warning:“ I know that God has determined to destroy you because you have done this and have refused to accept my counsel.”

Hurl your lightning bolts and scatter your enemies! Shoot your arrows and confuse them!Reach down from heaven and rescue me; rescue me from deep waters, from the power of my enemies.

As they plot their crimes, they say,“ We have devised the perfect plan!” Yes, the human heart and mind are cunning.But God himself will shoot them with his arrows, suddenly striking them down.Their own tongues will ruin them, and all who see them will shake their heads in scorn.

The nations have fallen into the pit they dug for others. Their own feet have been caught in the trap they set.The Lord is known for his justice. The wicked are trapped by their own deeds. Quiet Interlude

Silence their lying lips— those proud and arrogant lips that accuse the godly.

Obviously, the law applies to those to whom it was given, for its purpose is to keep people from having excuses, and to show that the entire world is guilty before God.For no one can ever be made right with God by doing what the law commands. The law simply shows us how sinful we are.

But the Lord our God is merciful and forgiving, even though we have rebelled against him.

Do to them as you did to the Midianites and as you did to Sisera and Jabin at the Kishon River.They were destroyed at Endor, and their decaying corpses fertilized the soil.Let their mighty nobles die as Oreb and Zeeb did. Let all their princes die like Zebah and Zalmunna,for they said,“ Let us seize for our own use these pasturelands of God!”O my God, scatter them like tumbleweed, like chaff before the wind!As a fire burns a forest and as a flame sets mountains ablaze,chase them with your fierce storm; terrify them with your tempest.Utterly disgrace them until they submit to your name, O Lord.Let them be ashamed and terrified forever. Let them die in disgrace.Then they will learn that you alone are called the Lord, that you alone are the Most High, supreme over all the earth.

Break the arms of these wicked, evil people! Go after them until the last one is destroyed.

Let the bountiful table set before them become a snare and their prosperity become a trap.Let their eyes go blind so they cannot see, and make their bodies shake continually.Pour out your fury on them; consume them with your burning anger.Let their homes become desolate and their tents be deserted.

End the evil of those who are wicked, and defend the righteous. For you look deep within the mind and heart, O righteous God.God is my shield, saving those whose hearts are true and right.God is an honest judge. He is angry with the wicked every day.If a person does not repent, God will sharpen his sword; he will bend and string his bow.He will prepare his deadly weapons and shoot his flaming arrows.The wicked conceive evil; they are pregnant with trouble and give birth to lies.They dig a deep pit to trap others, then fall into it themselves.

O Lord, oppose those who oppose me. Fight those who fight against me.Put on your armor, and take up your shield. Prepare for battle, and come to my aid.Lift up your spear and javelin against those who pursue me. Let me hear you say,“ I will give you victory!”Bring shame and disgrace on those trying to kill me; turn them back and humiliate those who want to harm me.Blow them away like chaff in the wind— a wind sent by the angel of the Lord.Make their path dark and slippery, with the angel of the Lord pursuing them.I did them no wrong, but they laid a trap for me. I did them no wrong, but they dug a pit to catch me.So let sudden ruin come upon them! Let them be caught in the trap they set for me! Let them be destroyed in the pit they dug for me.

Let death stalk my enemies; let the grave swallow them alive, for evil makes its home within them.

When David heard that Nabal was dead, he said,“ Praise the Lord, who has avenged the insult I received from Nabal and has kept me from doing it myself. Nabal has received the punishment for his sin.” Then David sent messengers to Abigail to ask her to become his wife.

Do not drag me away with the wicked— with those who do evil— those who speak friendly words to their neighbors while planning evil in their hearts.Give them the punishment they so richly deserve! Measure it out in proportion to their wickedness. Pay them back for all their evil deeds! Give them a taste of what they have done to others.

O Lord, pay back our neighbors seven times for the scorn they have hurled at you.

Arise, O Lord! Stand against them, and bring them to their knees! Rescue me from the wicked with your sword!

They rebelled against the words of God, scorning the counsel of the Most High.

O Lord, remember what the Edomites did on the day the armies of Babylon captured Jerusalem.“ Destroy it!” they yelled.“ Level it to the ground!”O Babylon, you will be destroyed. Happy is the one who pays you back for what you have done to us.Happy is the one who takes your babies and smashes them against the rocks!
