These things I remember as I pour out my soul: how I used to go to the house of God under the protection of the Mighty One with shouts of joy and praise among the festive throng.

When I remember what has happened, I tell God all my troubles. I remember how I used to walk to the house of God. The Mighty One guarded my steps. We shouted with joy and praised God as we went along with the joyful crowd.

These things I remember, as I pour out my soul: how I would go with the throng and lead them in procession to the house of God with glad shouts and songs of praise, a multitude keeping festival.

My heart is breaking as I remember how it used to be: I walked among the crowds of worshipers, leading a great procession to the house of God, singing for joy and giving thanks amid the sound of a great celebration!

I remember this as I pour out my heart: how I walked with many, leading the festive procession to the house of God, with joyful and thankful shouts.

I was glad because they said to me,“ We will go to the LORD’s temple.”

But Hannah replied,“ That’s not the way it is, my lord! I am under a great deal of stress. I have drunk neither wine nor beer. Rather, I have poured out my soul to the LORD.Don’t consider your servant a wicked woman, for until now I have spoken from my deep pain and anguish.”

They brought the ark of God and put it in the middle of the tent David had pitched for it. Then they offered burnt sacrifices and peace offerings before God.When David finished offering burnt sacrifices and peace offerings, he pronounced a blessing over the people in the LORD’s name.He then handed out to each Israelite man and woman a loaf of bread, a date cake, and a raisin cake.He appointed some of the Levites to serve before the ark of the LORD, to offer prayers, songs of thanks, and hymns to the LORD God of Israel.Asaph was the leader and Zechariah second in command, followed by Jeiel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Mattithiah, Eliab, Benaiah, Obed-Edom, and Jeiel. They were to play stringed instruments; Asaph was to sound the cymbals;and the priests Benaiah and Jahaziel were to blow trumpets regularly before the ark of God’s covenant.That day David first gave to Asaph and his colleagues this song of thanks to the LORD:Give thanks to the LORD! Call on his name! Make known his accomplishments among the nations!Sing to him! Make music to him! Tell about all his miraculous deeds!Boast about his holy name! Let the hearts of those who seek the LORD rejoice!Seek the LORD and the strength he gives! Seek his presence continually!Recall the miraculous deeds he performed, his mighty acts and the judgments he decreed,O children of Israel, God’s servant, you descendants of Jacob, God’s chosen ones!He is the LORD our God; he carries out judgment throughout the earth.Remember continually his covenantal decree, the promise he made to a thousand generations–the promise he made to Abraham, the promise he made by oath to Isaac!He gave it to Jacob as a decree, to Israel as a lasting promise,saying,“ To you I will give the land of Canaan as the portion of your inheritance.”When they were few in number, just a very few, and foreign residents within it,they wandered from nation to nation, and from one kingdom to another.He let no one oppress them, he disciplined kings for their sake,saying,“ Don’t touch my anointed ones! Don’t harm my prophets!”Sing to the LORD, all the earth! Announce every day how he delivers!Tell the nations about his splendor, tell all the nations about his miraculous deeds!For the LORD is great and certainly worthy of praise, he is more awesome than all gods.For all the gods of the nations are worthless, but the LORD made the heavens.Majestic splendor emanates from him, he is the source of strength and joy.Ascribe to the LORD, O families of the nations, ascribe to the LORD splendor and strength!Ascribe to the LORD the splendor he deserves! Bring an offering and enter his presence! Worship the LORD in holy attire!Tremble before him, all the earth! The world is established, it cannot be moved.Let the heavens rejoice, and the earth be happy! Let the nations say,‘ The LORD reigns!’Let the sea and everything in it shout! Praise the LORD!”David left Asaph and his colleagues there before the ark of the LORD’s covenant to serve before the ark regularly and fulfill each day’s requirements,including Obed-Edom and sixty-eight colleagues. Obed-Edom son of Jeduthun and Hosah were gatekeepers.Zadok the priest and his fellow priests served before the LORD’s tabernacle at the worship center in Gibeon,regularly offering burnt sacrifices to the LORD on the altar for burnt sacrifice, morning and evening, according to what is prescribed in the law of the LORD which he charged Israel to observe.Joining them were Heman, Jeduthun, and the rest of those chosen and designated by name to give thanks to the LORD.( For his loyal love endures!)Heman and Jeduthun were in charge of the music, including the trumpets, cymbals, and the other musical instruments used in praising God. The sons of Jeduthun guarded the entrance.Then all the people returned to their homes, and David went to pronounce a blessing on his family.

You are to rejoice in your festival, you, your son, your daughter, your male and female slaves, the Levites, the resident foreigners, the orphans, and the widows who are in your villages.You are to celebrate the festival seven days before the LORD your God in the place he chooses, for he will bless you in all your productivity and in whatever you do; so you will indeed rejoice!

On the twenty-third day of the seventh month, Solomon sent the people home. They left happy and contented because of the good the LORD had done for David, Solomon, and his people Israel.

“ O that I could be as I was in the months now gone, in the days when God watched over me,when he caused his lamp to shine upon my head, and by his light I walked through darkness;just as I was in my most productive time, when God’s intimate friendship was experienced in my tent,when the Almighty was still with me and my children were around me;when my steps were bathed with butter and the rock poured out for me streams of olive oil!When I went out to the city gate and secured my seat in the public square,the young men would see me and step aside, and the old men would get up and remain standing;the chief men refrained from talking and covered their mouths with their hands;the voices of the nobles fell silent, and their tongues stuck to the roof of their mouths.“ As soon as the ear heard these things, it blessed me, and when the eye saw them, it bore witness to me,for I rescued the poor who cried out for help, and the orphan who had no one to assist him;the blessing of the dying man descended on me, and I made the widow’s heart rejoice;I put on righteousness and it clothed me, my just dealing was like a robe and a turban;I was eyes for the blind and feet for the lame;I was a father to the needy, and I investigated the case of the person I did not know;I broke the fangs of the wicked, and made him drop his prey from his teeth.“ Then I thought,‘ I will die in my own home, my days as numerous as the grains of sand.My roots reach the water, and the dew lies on my branches all night long.My glory will always be fresh in me, and my bow ever new in my hand.’“ People listened to me and waited silently; they kept silent for my advice.After I had spoken, they did not respond; my words fell on them drop by drop.They waited for me as people wait for the rain, and they opened their mouths as for the spring rains.If I smiled at them, they hardly believed it; and they did not cause the light of my face to darken.I chose the way for them and sat as their chief; I lived like a king among his troops; I was like one who comforts mourners.“ But now they mock me, those who are younger than I, whose fathers I disdained too much to put with my sheep dogs.Moreover, the strength of their hands– what use was it to me? Men whose strength had perished;gaunt with want and hunger, they would gnaw the parched land, in former time desolate and waste.By the brush they would gather herbs from the salt marshes, and the root of the broom tree was their food.They were banished from the community– people shouted at them like they would shout at thieves–so that they had to live in the dry stream beds, in the holes of the ground, and among the rocks.They brayed like animals among the bushes and were huddled together under the nettles.Sons of senseless and nameless people, they were driven out of the land with whips.“ And now I have become their taunt song; I have become a byword among them.They detest me and maintain their distance; they do not hesitate to spit in my face.Because God has untied my tent cord and afflicted me, people throw off all restraint in my presence.On my right the young rabble rise up; they drive me from place to place, and build up siege ramps against me.They destroy my path; they succeed in destroying me without anyone assisting them.They come in as through a wide breach; amid the crash they come rolling in.Terrors are turned loose on me; they drive away my honor like the wind, and like a cloud my deliverance has passed away.“ And now my soul pours itself out within me; days of suffering take hold of me.Night pierces my bones; my gnawing pains never cease.With great power God grasps my clothing; he binds me like the collar of my tunic.He has flung me into the mud, and I have come to resemble dust and ashes.I cry out to you, but you do not answer me; I stand up, and you only look at me.You have become cruel to me; with the strength of your hand you attack me.You pick me up on the wind and make me ride on it; you toss me about in the storm.I know that you are bringing me to death, to the meeting place for all the living.“ Surely one does not stretch out his hand against a broken man when he cries for help in his distress.Have I not wept for the unfortunate? Was not my soul grieved for the poor?But when I hoped for good, trouble came; when I expected light, then darkness came.My heart is in turmoil unceasingly; the days of my affliction confront me.I go about blackened, but not by the sun; in the assembly I stand up and cry for help.I have become a brother to jackals and a companion of ostriches.My skin has turned dark on me; my body is hot with fever.My harp is used for mourning and my flute for the sound of weeping.

( 2: 1) Look! A herald is running on the mountains! A messenger is proclaiming deliverance:“ Celebrate your sacred festivals, O Judah! Fulfill your sacred vows to praise God! For never again will the wicked Assyrians invade you, they have been completely destroyed.”

Shout for joy to God, our source of strength! Shout out to the God of Jacob!Sing a song and play the tambourine, the pleasant sounding harp, and the ten-stringed instrument!Sound the ram’s horn on the day of the new moon, and on the day of the full moon when our festival begins.

You shall rejoice before him– you, your son, your daughter, your male and female slaves, the Levites in your villages, the resident foreigners, the orphans, and the widows among you– in the place where the LORD chooses to locate his name.

The descendants of Levi carried the ark of God on their shoulders with poles, just as Moses had ordered according to the divine command.David told the leaders of the Levites to appoint some of their relatives as musicians; they were to play various instruments, including stringed instruments and cymbals, and to sing loudly and joyfully.So the Levites appointed Heman son of Joel; one of his relatives, Asaph son of Berechiah; one of the descendants of Merari, Ethan son of Kushaiah;along with some of their relatives who were second in rank, including Zechariah, Jaaziel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Unni, Eliab, Benaiah, Maaseiah, Mattithiah, Eliphelehu, Mikneiah, Obed-Edom, and Jeiel, the gatekeepers.The musicians Heman, Asaph, and Ethan were to sound the bronze cymbals;Zechariah, Aziel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Unni, Eliab, Maaseiah, and Benaiah were to play the harps according to the alamoth style;Mattithiah, Eliphelehu, Mikneiah, Obed-Edom, Jeiel, and Azaziah were to play the lyres according to the sheminith style, as led by the director;Kenaniah, the leader of the Levites, was in charge of transport, for he was well-informed on this matter;Berechiah and Elkanah were guardians of the ark;Shebaniah, Joshaphat, Nethanel, Amasai, Zechariah, Benaiah, and Eliezer the priests were to blow the trumpets before the ark of God; Obed-Edom and Jehiel were also guardians of the ark.So David, the leaders of Israel, and the commanders of units of a thousand went to bring up the ark of the LORD’s covenant from the house of Obed-Edom with celebration.When God helped the Levites who were carrying the ark of the LORD’s covenant, they sacrificed seven bulls and seven rams.David was wrapped in a linen robe, as were all the Levites carrying the ark, the musicians, and Kenaniah the supervisor of transport and the musicians; David also wore a linen ephod.All Israel brought up the ark of the LORD’s covenant; they were shouting, blowing trumpets, sounding cymbals, and playing stringed instruments.

Get up! Cry out in the night when the night watches start! Pour out your heart like water before the face of the Lord! Lift up your hands to him for your children’s lives; they are fainting at every street corner.ר( Resh)

The entire assembly then decided to celebrate for seven more days; so they joyfully celebrated for seven more days.King Hezekiah of Judah supplied 1,000 bulls and 7,000 sheep for the assembly, while the officials supplied them with 1,000 bulls and 10,000 sheep. Many priests consecrated themselves.The celebration included the entire assembly of Judah, the priests, the Levites, the entire assembly of those who came from Israel, the resident foreigners who came from the land of Israel, and the residents of Judah.There was a great celebration in Jerusalem, unlike anything that had occurred in Jerusalem since the time of King Solomon son of David of Israel.
