He lifted me out of the pit of despair, out of the mud and the mire. He set my feet on solid ground and steadied me as I walked along.

He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand.

I was sliding down into the pit of death, and he pulled me out. He brought me up out of the mud and dirt. He set my feet on a rock. He gave me a firm place to stand on.

He drew me up from the pit of destruction, out of the miry bog, and set my feet upon a rock, making my steps secure.

The Lord directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives.

For he will conceal me there when troubles come; he will hide me in his sanctuary. He will place me out of reach on a high rock.

Deeper and deeper I sink into the mire; I can’t find a foothold. I am in deep water, and the floods overwhelm me.

Guide my steps by your word, so I will not be overcome by evil.

My enemy has chased me. He has knocked me to the ground and forces me to live in darkness like those in the grave.

For you will not leave my soul among the dead or allow your Holy One to rot in the grave.You have shown me the way of life, and you will fill me with the joy of your presence.’“ Dear brothers, think about this! You can be sure that the patriarch David wasn’t referring to himself, for he died and was buried, and his tomb is still here among us.But he was a prophet, and he knew God had promised with an oath that one of David’s own descendants would sit on his throne.David was looking into the future and speaking of the Messiah’s resurrection. He was saying that God would not leave him among the dead or allow his body to rot in the grave.

You have made a wide path for my feet to keep them from slipping.

“ Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock.Though the rain comes in torrents and the floodwaters rise and the winds beat against that house, it won’t collapse because it is built on bedrock.

Rescue me from the mud; don’t let me sink any deeper! Save me from those who hate me, and pull me from these deep waters.Don’t let the floods overwhelm me, or the deep waters swallow me, or the pit of death devour me.

From the ends of the earth, I cry to you for help when my heart is overwhelmed. Lead me to the towering rock of safety,

My steps have stayed on your path; I have not wavered from following you.

for your love for me is very great. You have rescued me from the depths of death.

But God released him from the horrors of death and raised him back to life, for death could not keep him in its grip.

Because of the covenant I made with you, sealed with blood, I will free your prisoners from death in a waterless dungeon.

You have allowed me to suffer much hardship, but you will restore me to life again and lift me up from the depths of the earth.

Hear my cry, for I am very low. Rescue me from my persecutors, for they are too strong for me.Bring me out of prison so I can thank you. The godly will crowd around me, for you are good to me.”

Death wrapped its ropes around me; the terrors of the grave overtook me. I saw only trouble and sorrow.

He reached down from heaven and rescued me; he drew me out of deep waters.He rescued me from my powerful enemies, from those who hated me and were too strong for me.

“ I sank beneath the waves, and the waters closed over me. Seaweed wrapped itself around my head.I sank down to the very roots of the mountains. I was imprisoned in the earth, whose gates lock shut forever. But you, O Lord my God, snatched me from the jaws of death!

So the officials took Jeremiah from his cell and lowered him by ropes into an empty cistern in the prison yard. It belonged to Malkijah, a member of the royal family. There was no water in the cistern, but there was a thick layer of mud at the bottom, and Jeremiah sank down into it.But Ebed melech the Ethiopian, an important court official, heard that Jeremiah was in the cistern. At that time the king was holding court at the Benjamin Gate,so Ebed melech rushed from the palace to speak with him.“ My lord the king,” he said,“ these men have done a very evil thing in putting Jeremiah the prophet into the cistern. He will soon die of hunger, for almost all the bread in the city is gone.”So the king told Ebed melech,“ Take thirty of my men with you, and pull Jeremiah out of the cistern before he dies.”So Ebed melech took the men with him and went to a room in the palace beneath the treasury, where he found some old rags and discarded clothing. He carried these to the cistern and lowered them to Jeremiah on a rope.Ebed melech called down to Jeremiah,“ Put these rags under your armpits to protect you from the ropes.” Then when Jeremiah was ready,

throwing the wicked into the fiery furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

They threw me into a pit and dropped stones on me.The water rose over my head, and I cried out,“ This is the end!”But I called on your name, Lord, from deep within the pit.

They will be rounded up and put in prison. They will be shut up in prison and will finally be punished.
