我曾看到惡人的強橫，像本地青翠的樹那樣蔓延；

我見惡人勢盛、張大如青葱之樹、在其本土兮、

我見惡者強暴、蔓衍葱蘢、若茂樹兮、

我曾見強暴之惡人興旺、如根深葉茂之大樹、

曾見惡勢張。葱翠如春林。

I have seen a wicked and ruthless man flourishing like a luxuriant native tree,

I saw a mean and sinful person. He was doing well, like a green tree in its own land.

I have seen a wicked, ruthless man, spreading himself like a green laurel tree.

I have seen wicked and ruthless people flourishing like a tree in its native soil.

I have seen the fool taking root, And I cursed his home immediately.

Why do the wicked still live, Grow old, and also become very powerful?Their descendants endure with them in their sight, And their offspring before their eyes,Their houses are safe from fear, And the rod of God is not on them.His ox mates without fail; His cow calves and does not miscarry.They send out their boys like the flock, And their children dance.They sing with the tambourine and harp, And rejoice at the sound of the flute.They spend their days in prosperity, And suddenly they go down to Sheol.Yet they say to God,‘ Go away from us! We do not even desire the knowledge of Your ways.Who is the Almighty, that we should serve Him, And what would we gain if we plead with Him?’Behold, their prosperity is not in their hand; The advice of the wicked is far from me.“ How often is the lamp of the wicked put out, Or does their disaster fall on them? Does God apportion destruction in His anger?

So are the paths of all who forget God; And the hope of the godless will perish,His confidence is fragile, And his trust is a spider’s web.He depends on his house, but it does not stand; He holds on to it, but it does not endure.He flourishes before the sun, And his shoots spread out over his garden.His roots wrap around a rock pile, He grasps a house of stones.If he is removed from his place, Then it will deny him, saying,‘ I never saw you.’Behold, this is the joy of His way; And out of the dust others will spring.

I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High.’Nevertheless you will be brought down to Sheol, To the recesses of the pit.Those who see you will stare at you, They will closely examine you, saying,‘ Is this the man who made the earth tremble, Who shook kingdoms,Who made the world like a wilderness And overthrew its cities, Who did not allow his prisoners to go home?’All the kings of the nations lie in glory, Each in his own tomb.But you have been hurled out of your tomb Like a rejected branch, Clothed with those killed who have been pierced with a sword, Who go down to the stones of the pit Like a trampled corpse.

All the birds of the sky nested in its twigs, And under its branches all the animals of the field gave birth, And all great nations lived under its shade.So it was beautiful in its greatness, in the length of its branches; For its roots extended to many waters.The cedars in God’s garden could not match it; The junipers could not compare with its branches, And the plane trees could not match its branches. No tree in God’s garden could compare with it in its beauty.I made it beautiful with the multitude of its branches, And all the trees of Eden, which were in the garden of God, were jealous of it.‘ Therefore this is what the Lord God says:“ Because it is tall in stature and has put its top among the clouds, and its heart is haughty in its loftiness,

For I was envious of the arrogant As I saw the prosperity of the wicked.For there are no pains in their death, And their belly is fat.They are not in trouble like other people, Nor are they tormented together with the rest of mankind.Therefore arrogance is their necklace; The garment of violence covers them.Their eye bulges from fatness; The imaginations of their heart overflow.They mock and wickedly speak of oppression; They speak from on high.They have set their mouth against the heavens, And their tongue parades through the earth.Therefore his people return here, And abundant waters are drunk by them.They say,“ How does God know? And is there knowledge with the Most High?”

Then Haman told them of the glory of his riches, and his many sons, and every occasion on which the king had honored him and how he had promoted him above the officials and servants of the king.

“ To which among the trees of Eden are you so alike in glory and greatness? Yet you will be brought down with the trees of Eden to the earth beneath; you will lie in the midst of the uncircumcised with those who were killed by the sword. This is Pharaoh and all his hordes!” ’ declares the Lord God.”

The tree that you saw, which became large and grew strong, whose height reached to the sky and was visible to all the earth,and whose foliage was beautiful and its fruit abundant, and in which was food for all, under which the animals of the field lived and in whose branches the birds of the sky settled—it is you, O king; for you have become great and grown strong, and your majesty has become great and reached to the sky, and your dominion to the end of the earth.And in that the king saw an angelic watcher, a holy one, descending from heaven and saying,“ Chop down the tree and destroy it; yet leave the stump with its roots in the ground, but with a band of iron and bronze around it in the new grass of the field, let him be drenched with the dew of heaven, and let him share with the animals of the field until seven periods of time pass over him,”this is the interpretation, O king, and this is the decree of the Most High, which has come upon my lord the king:that you be driven away from mankind and your dwelling place be with the animals of the field, and you be given grass to eat like cattle and be drenched with the dew of heaven; and seven periods of time will pass over you, until you recognize that the Most High is ruler over the realm of mankind and bestows it on whomever He wishes.And in that it was commanded to leave the stump with the roots of the tree, your kingdom will remain as yours after you recognize that it is Heaven that rules.Therefore, O king, may my advice be pleasing to you: wipe away your sin by doing righteousness, and your wrongdoings by showing mercy to the poor, in case there may be a prolonging of your prosperity.’“ All of this happened to Nebuchadnezzar the king.Twelve months later he was walking on the roof of the royal palace of Babylon.The king began speaking and was saying,‘ Is this not Babylon the great, which I myself have built as a royal residence by the might of my power and for the honor of my majesty?’While the word was still in the king’s mouth, a voice came from heaven, saying,‘ King Nebuchadnezzar, to you it is declared: sovereignty has been removed from you,and you will be driven away from mankind, and your dwelling place will be with the animals of the field. You will be given grass to eat like cattle, and seven periods of time will pass over you until you recognize that the Most High is ruler over the realm of mankind and bestows it on whomever He wishes.’Immediately the word concerning Nebuchadnezzar was fulfilled; and he was driven away from mankind and began eating grass like cattle, and his body was drenched with the dew of heaven until his hair had grown like eagles’ feathers and his nails like birds’ claws.
