My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, so far from my cries of anguish?

My God, my God, why have you deserted me? Why do you seem so far away when I need you to save me? Why do you seem so far away that you can’t hear my groans?

My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, from the words of my groaning?

My God, my God, why have you abandoned me? Why are you so far from my deliverance and from my words of groaning?

Then at three o’clock Jesus called out with a loud voice,“ Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which means“ My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?”

At about three o’clock, Jesus called out with a loud voice,“ Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” which means“ My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?”

While Jesus was here on earth, he offered prayers and pleadings, with a loud cry and tears, to the one who could rescue him from death. And God heard his prayers because of his deep reverence for God.

I cannot eat for sighing; my groans pour out like water.

My enemies surround me like a pack of dogs; an evil gang closes in on me. They have pierced my hands and feet.

The Lord will not abandon his people, because that would dishonor his great name. For it has pleased the Lord to make you his very own people.

Don’t love money; be satisfied with what you have. For God has said,“ I will never fail you. I will never abandon you.”

Declare me innocent, O God! Defend me against these ungodly people. Rescue me from these unjust liars.For you are God, my only safe haven. Why have you tossed me aside? Why must I wander around in grief, oppressed by my enemies?Send out your light and your truth; let them guide me. Let them lead me to your holy mountain, to the place where you live.There I will go to the altar of God, to God— the source of all my joy. I will praise you with my harp, O God, my God!Why am I discouraged? Why is my heart so sad? I will put my hope in God! I will praise him again— my Savior and my God!

I am exhausted and completely crushed. My groans come from an anguished heart.

They say,“ God has abandoned him. Let’s go and get him, for no one will help him now.”

For the Lord loves justice, and he will never abandon the godly. He will keep them safe forever, but the children of the wicked will die.

When I refused to confess my sin, my body wasted away, and I groaned all day long.Day and night your hand of discipline was heavy on me. My strength evaporated like water in the summer heat. Interlude

O Lord, why do you stand so far away? Why do you hide when I am in trouble?

As the deer longs for streams of water, so I long for you, O God.I thirst for God, the living God. When can I go and stand before him?

Keep me safe, O God, for I have come to you for refuge.

Do not stay so far from me, for trouble is near, and no one else can help me.

Then he said,“ When I was with you before, I told you that everything written about me in the law of Moses and the prophets and in the Psalms must be fulfilled.”

He prayed more fervently, and he was in such agony of spirit that his sweat fell to the ground like great drops of blood.

But I am trusting you, O Lord, saying,“ You are my God!”My future is in your hands. Rescue me from those who hunt me down relentlessly.Let your favor shine on your servant. In your unfailing love, rescue me.

For I am ready to set things right, not in the distant future, but right now! I am ready to save Jerusalem and show my glory to Israel.

We growl like hungry bears; we moan like mournful doves. We look for justice, but it never comes. We look for rescue, but it is far away from us.

Don’t let me suffer the fate of sinners. Don’t condemn me along with murderers.
