He gives his king great victories; he shows unfailing love to his anointed, to David and to his descendants forever.

The Lord helps his king win great battles. He shows his faithful love to his anointed king. He shows it to David and to his family forever.

Great salvation he brings to his king, and shows steadfast love to his anointed, to David and his offspring forever.

For you grant victory to kings! You rescued your servant David from the fatal sword.

He is the one who will build a house— a temple— for my name. And I will secure his royal throne forever.

He took David from tending the ewes and lambs and made him the shepherd of Jacob’s descendants— God’s own people, Israel.He cared for them with a true heart and led them with skillful hands.

He has sent us a mighty Savior from the royal line of his servant David,

Therefore, God elevated him to the place of highest honor and gave him the name above all other names,that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth,and every tongue declare that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

For God’s gifts and his call can never be withdrawn.

God gave the promises to Abraham and his child. And notice that the Scripture doesn’t say“ to his children,” as if it meant many descendants. Rather, it says“ to his child”— and that, of course, means Christ.

You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus.He will be very great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his ancestor David.And he will reign over Israel forever; his Kingdom will never end!”

I have found my servant David. I have anointed him with my holy oil.I will steady him with my hand; with my powerful arm I will make him strong.His enemies will not defeat him, nor will the wicked overpower him.I will beat down his adversaries before him and destroy those who hate him.My faithfulness and unfailing love will be with him, and by my authority he will grow in power.I will extend his rule over the sea, his dominion over the rivers.And he will call out to me,‘ You are my Father, my God, and the Rock of my salvation.’I will make him my firstborn son, the mightiest king on earth.I will love him and be kind to him forever; my covenant with him will never end.I will preserve an heir for him; his throne will be as endless as the days of heaven.But if his descendants forsake my instructions and fail to obey my regulations,if they do not obey my decrees and fail to keep my commands,then I will punish their sin with the rod, and their disobedience with beating.But I will never stop loving him nor fail to keep my promise to him.No, I will not break my covenant; I will not take back a single word I said.I have sworn an oath to David, and in my holiness I cannot lie:His dynasty will go on forever; his kingdom will endure as the sun.It will be as eternal as the moon, my faithful witness in the sky!” InterludeBut now you have rejected him and cast him off. You are angry with your anointed king.

The Lord said,“ I have made a covenant with David, my chosen servant. I have sworn this oath to him:‘ I will establish your descendants as kings forever; they will sit on your throne from now until eternity.’” Interlude

For the sake of your servant David, do not reject the king you have anointed.

The Good News is about his Son. In his earthly life he was born into King David’s family line,

Those who fight against the Lord will be shattered. He thunders against them from heaven; the Lord judges throughout the earth. He gives power to his king; he increases the strength of his anointed one.”

For David himself never ascended into heaven, yet he said,‘ The Lord said to my Lord,“ Sit in the place of honor at my right handuntil I humble your enemies, making them a footstool under your feet.”’“ So let everyone in Israel know for certain that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, to be both Lord and Messiah!”

For a child is born to us, a son is given to us. The government will rest on his shoulders. And he will be called: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.His government and its peace will never end. He will rule with fairness and justice from the throne of his ancestor David for all eternity. The passionate commitment of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies will make this happen!

And now, it has pleased you to bless the house of your servant, so that it will continue forever before you. For when you grant a blessing, O Lord, it is an eternal blessing!”

For the Lord declares,“ I have placed my chosen king on the throne in Jerusalem, on my holy mountain.”

Now the Lord said to Samuel,“ You have mourned long enough for Saul. I have rejected him as king of Israel, so fill your flask with olive oil and go to Bethlehem. Find a man named Jesse who lives there, for I have selected one of his sons to be my king.”

For when you die and join your ancestors, I will raise up one of your descendants, one of your sons, and I will make his kingdom strong.He is the one who will build a house— a temple— for me. And I will secure his throne forever.I will be his father, and he will be my son. I will never take my favor from him as I took it from the one who ruled before you.I will confirm him as king over my house and my kingdom for all time, and his throne will be secure forever.’”
