So Saul took his own sword and fell on it.When his armor bearer saw that Saul was dead, he likewise fell on his sword and died.So Saul died with his three sons, and all those of his house died together.When all the people of Israel who were in the valley saw that they had fled, and that Saul and his sons were dead, they abandoned their cities and fled; and the Philistines came and lived in them.

Then all Israel gathered to David at Hebron and said,“ Behold, we are your bone and your flesh.In times past, even when Saul was king, you were the one who led out and brought in Israel; and the Lord your God said to you,‘ You shall shepherd My people Israel, and you shall be leader over My people Israel.’ ”So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, and David made a covenant with them in Hebron before the Lord; and they anointed David king over Israel, in accordance with the word of the Lord through Samuel.

Now these are the last words of David. David the son of Jesse declares, The man who was raised on high, The anointed of the God of Jacob And the sweet psalmist of Israel, declares,

All of these, being men of war who helped in battle formation, came to Hebron with a perfect heart to make David king over all Israel; and all the rest of Israel also were of one mind to make David king.

And all the people were speaking well of Him, and admiring the gracious words which were coming from His lips; and yet they were saying,“ Is this not Joseph’s son?”

David said to all the assembly of Israel,“ If it seems good to you, and if it is from the Lord our God, let us send word everywhere to our kinsmen who remain in all the land of Israel, and to the priests and Levites who are with them in their cities with pasture lands, that they meet with us;

So Saul took his sword and fell on it.When his armor bearer saw that Saul was dead, he also fell on his sword and died with him.So Saul died with his three sons, his armor bearer, and all his men on that day together.Now when the people of Israel who were on the other side of the valley, with those who were beyond the Jordan, saw that the men of Israel had fled and that Saul and his sons were dead, they abandoned the cities and fled; then the Philistines came and settled in them.It came about on the next day, when the Philistines came to strip those killed, that they found Saul and his three sons fallen on Mount Gilboa.

Then David sang this song of mourning over Saul and his son Jonathan,and he told them to teach the sons of Judah the mourning song of the bow; behold, it is written in the Book of Jashar.“ Your beauty, Israel, is slaughtered on your high places! How the mighty have fallen!Tell it not in Gath, Proclaim it not in the streets of Ashkelon, Or the daughters of the Philistines will rejoice, The daughters of the uncircumcised will celebrate.Mountains of Gilboa, May there be no dew nor rain on you, or fields of offerings! For there the shield of the mighty was defiled, The shield of Saul, not anointed with oil.From the blood of those slaughtered, from the fat of the mighty, The bow of Jonathan did not turn back, And the sword of Saul did not return unstained.Saul and Jonathan, beloved and delightful in life, And in their deaths they were not separated; They were swifter than eagles, They were mightier than lions.Daughters of Israel, weep over Saul, Who clothed you in scarlet, with jewelry, Who put gold jewelry on your apparel.How the mighty have fallen in the midst of the battle! Jonathan is slaughtered on your high places.I am distressed for you, my brother Jonathan; You have been a close friend to me. Your love for me was more wonderful Than the love of women.How the mighty have fallen, And the weapons of war have perished!”

Then the men of Judah came, and there they anointed David king over the house of Judah. And they told David, saying,“ It was the men of Jabesh gilead who buried Saul.”So David sent messengers to the men of Jabesh gilead, and said to them,“ May you be blessed of the Lord because you have shown this kindness to Saul your lord, and have buried him.And now may the Lord show kindness and truth to you; and I also will show this goodness to you, because you have done this thing.
