Then all the tribes of Israel came to David at Hebron and said,“ Behold, we are your bone and flesh.In times past, when Saul was king over us, it was you who led out and brought in Israel. And the Lord said to you,‘ You shall be shepherd of my people Israel, and you shall be prince over Israel.’”So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, and King David made a covenant with them at Hebron before the Lord, and they anointed David king over Israel.

You are the most handsome of the sons of men; grace is poured upon your lips; therefore God has blessed you forever.

Now the Philistines fought against Israel, and the men of Israel fled before the Philistines and fell slain on Mount Gilboa.And the Philistines overtook Saul and his sons, and the Philistines struck down Jonathan and Abinadab and Malchi-shua, the sons of Saul.The battle pressed hard against Saul, and the archers found him, and he was wounded by the archers.Then Saul said to his armor-bearer,“ Draw your sword and thrust me through with it, lest these uncircumcised come and mistreat me.” But his armor-bearer would not, for he feared greatly. Therefore Saul took his own sword and fell upon it.And when his armor-bearer saw that Saul was dead, he also fell upon his sword and died.Thus Saul died; he and his three sons and all his house died together.And when all the men of Israel who were in the valley saw that the army had fled and that Saul and his sons were dead, they abandoned their cities and fled, and the Philistines came and lived in them.

Then all Israel gathered together to David at Hebron and said,“ Behold, we are your bone and flesh.In times past, even when Saul was king, it was you who led out and brought in Israel. Now these are the last words of David: The oracle of David, the son of Jesse, the oracle of the man who was raised on high, the anointed of the God of Jacob, the sweet psalmist of Israel:

All these, men of war, arrayed in battle order, came to Hebron with a whole heart to make David king over all Israel. Likewise, all the rest of Israel were of a single mind to make David king.

And all spoke well of him and marveled at the gracious words that were coming from his mouth. And they said,“ Is not this Joseph’s son?”

And David said to all the assembly of Israel,“ If it seems good to you and from the Lord our God, let us send abroad to our brothers who remain in all the lands of Israel, as well as to the priests and Levites in the cities that have pasturelands, that they may be gathered to us.

The men of Judah captured another 10,000 alive and took them to the top of a rock and threw them down from the top of the rock, and they were all dashed to pieces.

And the Philistines came and lived in them.The next day, when the Philistines came to strip the slain, they found Saul and his three sons fallen on Mount Gilboa.

And David lamented with this lamentation over Saul and Jonathan his son,and he said it should be taught to the people of Judah; behold, it is written in the Book of Jashar. He said:“ Your glory, O Israel, is slain on your high places! How the mighty have fallen!Tell it not in Gath, publish it not in the streets of Ashkelon, lest the daughters of the Philistines rejoice, lest the daughters of the uncircumcised exult.“ You mountains of Gilboa, let there be no dew or rain upon you, nor fields of offerings! For there the shield of the mighty was defiled, the shield of Saul, not anointed with oil.“ From the blood of the slain, from the fat of the mighty, the bow of Jonathan turned not back, and the sword of Saul returned not empty.“ Saul and Jonathan, beloved and lovely! In life and in death they were not divided; they were swifter than eagles; they were stronger than lions.“ You daughters of Israel, weep over Saul, who clothed you luxuriously in scarlet, who put ornaments of gold on your apparel.“ How the mighty have fallen in the midst of the battle!“ Jonathan lies slain on your high places.I am distressed for you, my brother Jonathan; very pleasant have you been to me; your love to me was extraordinary, surpassing the love of women.“ How the mighty have fallen, and the weapons of war perished!”

And the men of Judah came, and there they anointed David king over the house of Judah. When they told David,“ It was the men of Jabesh-gilead who buried Saul,”David sent messengers to the men of Jabesh-gilead and said to them,“ May you be blessed by the Lord, because you showed this loyalty to Saul your lord and buried him.Now may the Lord show steadfast love and faithfulness to you. And I will do good to you because you have done this thing.
