His disciples remembered that it was written,“ Zeal for your house will eat me up.”

For the zeal of your house consumes me. The reproaches of those who reproach you have fallen on me.

He said,“ I have been very jealous for Yahweh, the God of Armies; for the children of Israel have forsaken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword. I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.”

Jesus said to them,“ Did you never read in the Scriptures,‘ The stone which the builders rejected was made the head of the corner. This was from the Lord. It is marvelous in our eyes?’

For God commanded,‘ Honor your father and your mother,’ and,‘ He who speaks evil of father or mother, let him be put to death.’But you say,‘ Whoever may tell his father or his mother,“ Whatever help you might otherwise have gotten from me is a gift devoted to God,”he shall not honor his father or mother.’ You have made the commandment of God void because of your tradition.

When they had appointed him a day, many people came to him at his lodging. He explained to them, testifying about God’s Kingdom, and persuading them concerning Jesus, both from the law of Moses and from the prophets, from morning until evening.Some believed the things which were spoken, and some disbelieved.When they didn’t agree among themselves, they departed after Paul had spoken one word,“ The Holy Spirit spoke rightly through Isaiah the prophet to our fathers,saying,‘ Go to this people and say, in hearing, you will hear, but will in no way understand. In seeing, you will see, but will in no way perceive.For this people’s heart has grown callous. Their ears are dull of hearing. Their eyes they have closed. Lest they should see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their heart, and would turn again, then I would heal them.’

But Jesus answered them,“ You are mistaken, not knowing the Scriptures, nor the power of God.

But he said to them,“ Haven’t you read what David did, when he was hungry, and those who were with him;how he entered into God’s house, and ate the show bread, which was not lawful for him to eat, neither for those who were with him, but only for the priests?Or have you not read in the law, that on the Sabbath day, the priests in the temple profane the Sabbath, and are guiltless?

He said,“ I have been very jealous for Yahweh, the God of Armies; for the children of Israel have forsaken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword. I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.”

For those who dwell in Jerusalem, and their rulers, because they didn’t know him, nor the voices of the prophets which are read every Sabbath, fulfilled them by condemning him.

and said to him,“ Do you hear what these are saying?” Jesus said to them,“ Yes. Did you never read,‘ Out of the mouth of babes and nursing babies you have perfected praise?’”

Have the workers of iniquity no knowledge, who eat up my people as they eat bread, and don’t call on God?

He said to them,“ It is written,‘ My house shall be called a house of prayer,’ but you have made it a den of robbers!”

But you go and learn what this means:‘ I desire mercy, and not sacrifice,’ for I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”
