They grumbled in their tents and did not obey the Lord.

In their tents they told the Lord how unhappy they were. They didn’t obey him.

They murmured in their tents, and did not obey the voice of the Lord.

Instead, they grumbled in their tents and refused to obey the Lord.

“ But you were not willing to go up. You rebelled against the command of the LORD your God.You grumbled in your tents and said,‘ The LORD brought us out of the land of Egypt to hand us over to the Amorites in order to destroy us, because he hates us.

For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture, the sheep under his care. Today, if you hear his voice:Do not harden your hearts as at Meribah, as on that day at Massah in the wildernesswhere your ancestors tested me; they tried me, though they had seen what I did.

Then the whole community broke into loud cries, and the people wept that night.All the Israelites complained about Moses and Aaron, and the whole community told them,“ If only we had died in the land of Egypt, or if only we had died in this wilderness!Why is the LORD bringing us into this land to die by the sword? Our wives and children will become plunder. Wouldn’t it be better for us to go back to Egypt?”So they said to one another,“ Let’s appoint a leader and go back to Egypt.”

Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says: Today, if you hear his voice,do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion, on the day of testing in the wilderness,

none of the men who have seen my glory and the signs I performed in Egypt and in the wilderness, and have tested me these ten times and did not obey me,
