Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute.

Speak up for those who can’t speak for themselves. Speak up for the rights of all those who are poor.

Open your mouth for the mute, for the rights of all who are destitute.

Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves; ensure justice for those being crushed.

Speak up for those who have no voice, for the justice of all who are dispossessed.

Open your mouth for the speechless, In the cause of all who are appointed to die.

Open thy mouth for the dumb, In the cause of all such as are left desolate.

Open your mouth on behalf of those unable to speak, for the legal rights of all the dying.

Vindicate the weak and fatherless; Do justice to the afflicted and destitute.Rescue the weak and needy; Save them from the hand of the wicked.

Rescue those who are being taken away to death, And those who are staggering to the slaughter, Oh hold them back!If you say,“ See, we did not know this,” Does He who weighs the hearts not consider it? And does He who watches over your soul not know it? And will He not repay a person according to his work?

But the hand of Ahikam the son of Shaphan was with Jeremiah, so that he was not handed over to the people to put him to death.

Then the officials and all the people said to the priests and the prophets,“ No death sentence for this man! For he has spoken to us in the name of the Lord our God.”Then some of the elders of the land rose up and spoke to all the assembly of the people, saying,“ Micah of Moresheth used to prophesy in the days of Hezekiah king of Judah; and he spoke to all the people of Judah, saying,‘ This is what the Lord of armies has said:“ Zion will be plowed like a field, And Jerusalem will become heaps of ruins, And the mountain of the house like the high places of a forest.” ’Did Hezekiah king of Judah and all Judah actually put him to death? Did he not fear the Lord and plead for the favor of the Lord, and the Lord relented of the disaster which He had pronounced against them? But we are committing a great evil against our own lives!”

Then Ahimelech answered the king and said,“ And who among all your servants is as faithful as David, the king’s own son in law, who is commander over your bodyguard, and is honored in your house?Did I just begin to inquire of God for him today? Far be it from me! Do not let the king impute anything against his servant or against any of the household of my father, because your servant knows nothing at all of this whole affair.”

“ Our Law does not judge the person unless it first hears from him and knows what he is doing, does it?”

But Ebed melech the Ethiopian, a eunuch, while he was in the king’s palace, heard that they had put Jeremiah in the cistern. Now the king was sitting at the Gate of Benjamin;and Ebed melech went out from the king’s palace and spoke to the king, saying,“ My lord the king, these men have acted wickedly in all that they have done to Jeremiah the prophet whom they have thrown into the cistern; and he will die right where he is because of the famine, for there is no more bread in the city.”Then the king commanded Ebed melech the Ethiopian, saying,“ Take thirty men from here under your authority and bring Jeremiah the prophet up from the cistern before he dies.”

Because I saved the poor who cried for help, And the orphan who had no helper.The blessing of the one who was about to perish came upon me, And I made the widow’s heart sing for joy.I put on righteousness, and it clothed me; My justice was like a robe and a headband.I was eyes to those who were blind, And feet to those who could not walk.I was a father to the poor, And I investigated the case which I did not know.I broke the jaws of the wicked And rescued the prey from his teeth.

Wisdom is too exalted for a fool, He does not open his mouth at the gate.

Then Mordecai told them to reply to Esther,“ Do not imagine that you in the king’s palace can escape any more than all the other Jews.For if you keep silent at this time, liberation and rescue will arise for the Jews from another place, and you and your father’s house will perish. And who knows whether you have not attained royalty for such a time as this?”Then Esther told them to reply to Mordecai,“ Go, gather all the Jews who are found in Susa, and fast for me; do not eat or drink for three days, night or day. I and my attendants also will fast in the same way. And then I will go in to the king, which is not in accordance with the law; and if I perish, I perish.”

Then Jonathan spoke well of David to his father Saul and said to him,“ May the king not sin against his servant David, since he has not sinned against you, and since his deeds have been very beneficial to you.For he took his life in his hand and struck the Philistine, and the Lord brought about a great victory for all Israel; you saw it and rejoiced. Why then would you sin against innocent blood by putting David to death for no reason?”Saul listened to the voice of Jonathan, and Saul vowed,“ As the Lord lives, David shall not be put to death.”Then Jonathan called David, and Jonathan told him all these words. And Jonathan brought David to Saul, and he was in his presence as before.

Let the groaning of the prisoner come before You; According to the greatness of Your power, let those who are doomed to die remain.

The leaders stopped talking And put their hands on their mouths;

But Jonathan replied to his father Saul and said to him,“ Why must he be put to death? What has he done?”
