A tyrannical ruler practices extortion, but one who hates ill- gotten gain will enjoy a long reign.

A ruler who is mean to his people takes money from them by force. But one who hates money gained in the wrong way will rule a long time.

A ruler who lacks understanding is a cruel oppressor, but he who hates unjust gain will prolong his days.

A ruler with no understanding will oppress his people, but one who hates corruption will have a long life.

Then I looked again at all the acts of oppression which were being done under the sun. And behold, I saw the tears of the oppressed and that they had no one to comfort them; and power was on the side of their oppressors, but they had no one to comfort them.

And the young men who had grown up with him spoke to him, saying,“ This is what you should say to this people who spoke to you, saying:‘ Your father made our yoke heavy, now you make it lighter for us!’ You should speak this way to them:‘ My little finger is thicker than my father’s waist!

One who walks righteously and speaks with integrity, One who rejects unjust gain And shakes his hands so that they hold no bribe; One who stops his ears from hearing about bloodshed And shuts his eyes from looking at evil;He will dwell on the heights, His refuge will be the impregnable rock; His bread will be given him, His water will be sure.

and he spoke to them according to the advice of the young men, saying,“ My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add to your yoke; my father disciplined you with whips, but I will discipline you with scorpions!”

But the previous governors who were before me laid burdens on the people and took from them bread and wine besides forty shekels of silver; even their servants domineered the people. But I did not do so because of my fear of God.

Hear this word, you cows of Bashan who are on the mountain of Samaria, Who exploit the poor, who oppress the needy, And say to their husbands,“ Bring now, that we may drink!”

Furthermore, you shall select out of all the people able men who fear God, men of truth, those who hate dishonest gain; and you shall place these over them as leaders of thousands, of hundreds, of fifties, and of tens.
