As the crucible is for silver and the furnace is for gold, so a person is proved by the praise he receives.

The crucible for silver and the furnace for gold, but people are tested by their praise.

Fire tests silver, and heat tests gold. But people are tested by the praise they receive.

The crucible is for silver, and the furnace is for gold, and a man is tested by his praise.

As a crucible refines silver, and a smelter refines gold, so a person should refine his praise.

Now in all Israel everyone acknowledged that there was no man as handsome as Absalom. From the sole of his feet to the top of his head he was perfect in appearance.

Such trials show the proven character of your faith, which is much more valuable than gold– gold that is tested by fire, even though it is passing away– and will bring praise and glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.

Then I will bring the remaining third into the fire; I will refine them like silver is refined and will test them like gold is tested. They will call on my name and I will answer; I will say,‘ These are my people,’ and they will say,‘ The LORD is my God.’”

The women who were playing the music sang,“ Saul has struck down his thousands, but David his tens of thousands!”This made Saul very angry. The statement displeased him and he thought,“ They have attributed to David tens of thousands, but to me they have attributed only thousands. What does he lack, except the kingdom?”

He will act like a refiner and purifier of silver and will cleanse the Levites and refine them like gold and silver. Then they will offer the LORD a proper offering.

Absalom acted this way toward everyone in Israel who came to the king for justice. In this way Absalom won the loyalty of the citizens of Israel.After four years Absalom said to the king,“ Let me go and repay my vow that I made to the LORD while I was in Hebron.For I made this vow when I was living in Geshur in Aram:‘ If the LORD really does allow me to return to Jerusalem, I will serve the LORD.’”The king replied to him,“ Go in peace.” So Absalom got up and went to Hebron.Then Absalom sent spies through all the tribes of Israel who said,“ When you hear the sound of the horn, you may assume that Absalom rules in Hebron.”Now two hundred men had gone with Absalom from Jerusalem. Since they were invited, they went naively and were unaware of what Absalom was planning.While he was offering sacrifices, Absalom sent for Ahithophel the Gilonite, David’s adviser, to come from his city, Giloh. The conspiracy was gaining momentum, and the people were starting to side with Absalom.

For you, O God, tested us; you purified us like refined silver.

When Saul saw how very successful he was, he was afraid of him.But all Israel and Judah loved David, for he was the one leading them out to battle and back.

Then the leaders of the Philistines would march out, and as often as they did so, David achieved more success than all of Saul’s servants. His name was held in high esteem.

Dear friends, do not be astonished that a trial by fire is occurring among you, as though something strange were happening to you.

The LORD’s words are absolutely reliable. They are as untainted as silver purified in a furnace on the ground, where it is thoroughly refined.
