I went past the field of a sluggard, past the vineyard of someone who has no sense;

I went past the field of someone who didn’t want to work. I went past the vineyard of someone who didn’t have any sense.

I walked by the field of a lazy person, the vineyard of one with no common sense.

I went by the field of a slacker and by the vineyard of one lacking sense.

I passed by the field of a lazy one, And by the vineyard of a person lacking sense,

I went by the field of the lazy man, And by the vineyard of the man devoid of understanding;

I went by the field of the sluggard, And by the vineyard of the man void of understanding;

I went by the field of a slacker and by the vineyard of a man lacking sense.

I went by the field of the slothful, and by the vineyard of the man void of understanding;

I passed by the field of a sluggard, by the vineyard of one who lacks wisdom.

I went by the field of the sluggard, by the vineyard of the man void of understanding:

As I have seen, those who plow iniquity and sow trouble reap the same.

“ I will show you; hear me, and what I have seen I will declare

Behold, this we have searched out; it is true. Hear, and know it for your good.”

All this I observed while applying my heart to all that is done under the sun, when man had power over man to his hurt.Then I saw the wicked buried. They used to go in and out of the holy place and were praised in the city where they had done such things. This also is vanity.Because the sentence against an evil deed is not executed speedily, the heart of the children of man is fully set to do evil.

He who commits adultery lacks sense; he who does it destroys himself.

I have been young, and now am old, yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken or his children begging for bread.

Go to the ant, O sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise.Without having any chief, officer, or ruler,she prepares her bread in summer and gathers her food in harvest.How long will you lie there, O sluggard? When will you arise from your sleep?A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest,and poverty will come upon you like a robber, and want like an armed man.A worthless person, a wicked man, goes about with crooked speech,winks with his eyes, signals with his feet, points with his finger,with perverted heart devises evil, continually sowing discord;therefore calamity will come upon him suddenly; in a moment he will be broken beyond healing.There are six things that the Lord hates, seven that are an abomination to him:haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that make haste to run to evil,a false witness who breathes out lies, and one who sows discord among brothers.

Again I saw all the oppressions that are done under the sun. And behold, the tears of the oppressed, and they had no one to comfort them! On the side of their oppressors there was power, and there was no one to comfort them.And I thought the dead who are already dead more fortunate than the living who are still alive.But better than both is he who has not yet been and has not seen the evil deeds that are done under the sun.Then I saw that all toil and all skill in work come from a man’s envy of his neighbor. This also is vanity and a striving after wind.The fool folds his hands and eats his own flesh.Better is a handful of quietness than two hands full of toil and a striving after wind.Again, I saw vanity under the sun:one person who has no other, either son or brother, yet there is no end to all his toil, and his eyes are never satisfied with riches, so that he never asks,“ For whom am I toiling and depriving myself of pleasure?” This also is vanity and an unhappy business.

Whoever works his land will have plenty of bread, but he who follows worthless pursuits lacks sense.

In my vain life I have seen everything. There is a righteous man who perishes in his righteousness, and there is a wicked man who prolongs his life in his evildoing.

On the lips of him who has understanding, wisdom is found, but a rod is for the back of him who lacks sense.

The upright see it and are glad, and all wickedness shuts its mouth.
