I went past the field of a sluggard, past the vineyard of someone who has no sense;

I went past the field of someone who didn’t want to work. I went past the vineyard of someone who didn’t have any sense.

I passed by the field of a sluggard, by the vineyard of a man lacking sense,

I walked by the field of a lazy person, the vineyard of one with no common sense.

I passed by the field of a lazy one, And by the vineyard of a person lacking sense,

I went by the field of the lazy man, And by the vineyard of the man devoid of understanding;

I went by the field of the sluggard, And by the vineyard of the man void of understanding;

I went by the field of a slacker and by the vineyard of a man lacking sense.

I went by the field of the slothful, and by the vineyard of the man void of understanding;

I passed by the field of a sluggard, by the vineyard of one who lacks wisdom.

In my experience, those who plow injustice and those who sow trouble reap the same.

Listen to me and I will inform you. I will describe what I have seen,

We have investigated this, and it is true! Hear it and understand it for yourself.

All this I have seen, applying my mind to all the work that is done under the sun, at a time when one person has authority over another to his harm.In such circumstances, I saw the wicked buried. They came and went from the holy place, and they were praised in the city where they did those things. This too is futile.Because the sentence against an evil act is not carried out quickly, the heart of people is filled with the desire to commit evil.

The one who commits adultery lacks sense; whoever does so destroys himself.

I have been young and now I am old, yet I have not seen the righteous abandoned or his children begging for bread.

Go to the ant, you slacker! Observe its ways and become wise.Without leader, administrator, or ruler,it prepares its provisions in summer; it gathers its food during harvest.How long will you stay in bed, you slacker? When will you get up from your sleep?A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the arms to rest,and your poverty will come like a robber, your need, like a bandit.A worthless person, a wicked man goes around speaking dishonestly,winking his eyes, signaling with his feet, and gesturing with his fingers.He always plots evil with perversity in his heart; he stirs up trouble.Therefore calamity will strike him suddenly; he will be shattered instantly, beyond recovery.The LORD hates six things; in fact, seven are detestable to him:arrogant eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood,a heart that plots wicked schemes, feet eager to run to evil,a lying witness who gives false testimony, and one who stirs up trouble among brothers.

Again, I observed all the acts of oppression being done under the sun. Look at the tears of those who are oppressed; they have no one to comfort them. Power is with those who oppress them; they have no one to comfort them.So I commended the dead, who have already died, more than the living, who are still alive.But better than either of them is the one who has not yet existed, who has not seen the evil activity that is done under the sun.I saw that all labor and all skillful work is due to one person’s jealousy of another. This too is futile and a pursuit of the wind.The fool folds his arms and consumes his own flesh.Better one handful with rest than two handfuls with effort and a pursuit of the wind.Again, I saw futility under the sun:There is a person without a companion, without even a son or brother, and though there is no end to all his struggles, his eyes are still not content with riches.“ Who am I struggling for,” he asks,“ and depriving myself of good things?” This too is futile and a miserable task.

The one who works his land will have plenty of food, but whoever chases fantasies lacks sense.

In my futile life I have seen everything: someone righteous perishes in spite of his righteousness, and someone wicked lives long in spite of his evil.

Wisdom is found on the lips of the discerning, but a rod is for the back of the one who lacks sense.

The upright see it and rejoice, and all injustice shuts its mouth.
