Some of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers also debated with him. Some said,“ What is this ignorant show-off trying to say?” Others replied,“ He seems to be a preacher of foreign deities”— because he was telling the good news about Jesus and the resurrection.

Then the Jews said,“ Now we know you have a demon. Abraham died and so did the prophets. You say,‘ If anyone keeps my word, he will never taste death.’

Many of them were saying,“ He has a demon and he’s crazy. Why do you listen to him?”

But when the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy and began to contradict what Paul was saying, insulting him.Paul and Barnabas boldly replied,“ It was necessary that the word of God be spoken to you first. Since you reject it and judge yourselves unworthy of eternal life, we are turning to the Gentiles.

“ This is an amazing thing!” the man told them.“ You don’t know where he is from, and yet he opened my eyes.We know that God doesn’t listen to sinners, but if anyone is God-fearing and does his will, he listens to him.Throughout history no one has ever heard of someone opening the eyes of a person born blind.If this man were not from God, he wouldn’t be able to do anything.”“ You were born entirely in sin,” they replied,“ and are you trying to teach us?” Then they threw him out.

Disagreeing among themselves, they began to leave after Paul made one statement:“ The Holy Spirit was right in saying to your ancestors through the prophet Isaiahwhen he said, Go to these people and say: You will always be listening, but never understanding; and you will always be looking, but never perceiving.For the hearts of these people have grown callous, their ears are hard of hearing, and they have shut their eyes; otherwise they might see with their eyes and hear with their ears, understand with their heart and turn, and I would heal them.Therefore, let it be known to you that this salvation of God has been sent to the Gentiles; they will listen.”

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and discipline.

Some of the Pharisees who were with him heard these things and asked him,“ We aren’t blind too, are we?”

We are fools for Christ, but you are wise in Christ! We are weak, but you are strong! You are distinguished, but we are dishonored!Up to the present hour we are both hungry and thirsty; we are poorly clothed, roughly treated, homeless;we labor, working with our own hands. When we are reviled, we bless; when we are persecuted, we endure it;when we are slandered, we respond graciously. Even now, we are like the scum of the earth, like everyone’s garbage.
