My dear brothers and sisters, pay attention to what I say. Everyone should be quick to listen. But they should be slow to speak. They should be slow to get angry.

If possible, live in peace with everyone. Do that as much as you can.My dear friends, don’t try to get even. Leave room for God to show his anger. It is written,“ I am the God who judges people. I will pay them back,”( Deuteronomy 32:35) says the Lord.Do just the opposite. Scripture says,“ If your enemies are hungry, give them food to eat. If they are thirsty, give them something to drink. By doing those things, you will pile up burning coals on their heads.”( Proverbs 25:21, 22)Don’t let evil overcome you. Overcome evil by doing good.

Be kind and tender to one another. Forgive one another, just as God forgave you because of what Christ has done.You are the children that God dearly loves. So follow his example.

Avoiding a fight brings honor to a person. But every foolish person is quick to argue.

Peter came to Jesus. He asked,“ Lord, how many times should I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? Up to seven times?”Jesus answered,“ I tell you, not seven times, but 77 times.

But here is what I tell you. Love your enemies. Pray for those who hurt you.Then you will be children of your Father who is in heaven. He causes his sun to shine on evil people and good people. He sends rain on those who do right and those who don’t.

Now that their father was dead, Joseph’s brothers were worried. They said,“ Remember all the bad things we did to Joseph? What if he decides to hold those things against us? What if he pays us back for them?”So they sent a message to Joseph. They said,“ Your father gave us directions before he died.He said,‘ Here’s what you must say to Joseph. Tell him,“ I’m asking you to forgive your brothers. Forgive the terrible things they did to you. Forgive them for treating you so badly.” ’ Now then, please forgive our sins. We serve the God of your father.” When their message came to Joseph, he wept.Then his brothers came and threw themselves down in front of him.“ We are your slaves,” they said.But Joseph said to them,“ Don’t be afraid. Do you think I’m God?You planned to harm me. But God planned it for good. He planned to do what is now being done. He wanted to save many lives.So then, don’t be afraid. I’ll provide for you and your children.” He calmed their fears. And he spoke in a kind way to them.

Starting to argue is like making a crack in a dam. So drop the matter before a fight breaks out.

If your enemy is hungry, give him food to eat. If he is thirsty, give him water to drink.
