We have no inheritance in the son of Jesse; To your tents, Israel! Now look after your own house, David!” So Israel went away to their tents.

Then the men of Ephraim said to Gideon,“ What is this thing that you have done to us, not calling upon us when you went to fight against Midian?” And they quarreled with him vehemently.But he said to them,“ What have I done now in comparison with you? Is the gleaning of the grapes of Ephraim not better than the vintage of Abiezer?God has handed over to you the leaders of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb; and what was I able to do in comparison with you?” Then their anger toward him subsided when he said that.

Now David had said,“ It is certainly for nothing that I have guarded everything that this man has in the wilderness, so that nothing has gone missing of all that belonged to him! Nabal is his name, and stupidity is with him; but I your slave did not see the young men of my lord whom you sent.“ Now then, my lord, as the Lord lives, and as your soul lives, since the Lord has restrained you from shedding blood, and from avenging yourself by your own hand, now then, may your enemies and those who seek evil against my lord, be like Nabal.And now let this gift which your servant has brought to my lord be given to the young men who accompany my lord.Please forgive the offense of your slave; for the Lord will certainly make for my lord an enduring house, because my lord is fighting the battles of the Lord, and evil will not be found in you all your days.Should anyone rise up to pursue you and to seek your life, then the life of my lord shall be bound in the bundle of the living with the Lord your God; but the lives of your enemies He will sling out as from the hollow of a sling.And when the Lord does for my lord in accordance with all the good that He has spoken concerning you, and appoints you ruler over Israel,this will not become an obstacle to you, or a troubled heart to my lord, both by having shed blood without cause and by my lord’s having avenged himself. When the Lord deals well with my lord, then remember your slave.”Then David said to Abigail,“ Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, who sent you this day to meet me,and blessed be your discernment, and blessed be you, who have kept me this day from bloodshed and from avenging myself by my own hand.

But Nabal answered David’s servants and said,“ Who is David? And who is the son of Jesse? There are many servants today who are each breaking away from his master.Shall I then take my bread and my water and my meat that I have slaughtered for my shearers, and give it to men whose origin I do not know?”So David’s young men made their way back and returned; and they came and informed him in accordance with all these words.Then David said to his men,“ Each of you strap on his sword.” So each man strapped on his sword. And David also strapped on his sword, and about four hundred men went up behind David, while two hundred stayed with the baggage.

When I saw that you were no deliverer, I took my life in my hands and crossed over against the sons of Ammon, and the Lord handed them over to me. Why then have you come up to me this day to fight against me?”Then Jephthah gathered all the men of Gilead and fought Ephraim; and the men of Gilead defeated Ephraim, because they said,“ You are survivors of Ephraim, you Gileadites, in the midst of Ephraim and in the midst of Manasseh.”And the Gileadites took control of the crossing places of the Jordan opposite Ephraim. And it happened whenever any of the survivors of Ephraim said,“ Let me cross over,” that the men of Gilead would say to him,“ Are you an Ephraimite?” If he said,“ No,”then they would say to him,“ Just say,‘ Shibboleth.’ ” But he said,“ Sibboleth,” for he was not prepared to pronounce it correctly. Then they seized him and slaughtered him at the crossing places of the Jordan. So at that time forty two thousand from Ephraim fell.

But the men of Israel answered the men of Judah and said,“ We have ten parts in the king, therefore we also have more claim on David than you. Why then did you treat us with contempt? Was it not our advice first to bring back our king?” Yet the words of the men of Judah were harsher than the words of the men of Israel.
