樂逸遊、好談論、洩人機事、若誠慤之士、不攻發人之陰私。

往來談人是非者、必洩人之秘事、惟心誠者必隱人之私情、

A gossip betrays a confidence, but a trustworthy person keeps a secret.

Those who talk about others will tell secrets. But those who can be trusted keep the secrets of others.

Whoever goes about slandering reveals secrets, but he who is trustworthy in spirit keeps a thing covered.

Thou shalt not go up and down[ as] a talebearer among thy people: neither shalt thou stand against the blood of thy neighbour: I[ am] the LORD.

And withal they learn[ to be] idle, wandering about from house to house; and not only idle, but tattlers also and busybodies, speaking things which they ought not.

Debate thy cause with thy neighbour[ himself]; and discover not a secret to another:

Then came all the princes unto Jeremiah, and asked him: and he told them according to all these words that the king had commanded. So they left off speaking with him; for the matter was not perceived.

And the men answered her, Our life for yours, if ye utter not this our business. And it shall be, when the LORD hath given us the land, that we will deal kindly and truly with thee.

A faithful witness will not lie: but a false witness will utter lies.

Where no wood is,[ there] the fire goeth out: so where[ there is] no talebearer, the strife ceaseth.[ As] coals[ are] to burning coals, and wood to fire; so[ is] a contentious man to kindle strife.The words of a talebearer[ are] as wounds, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly.

And if thou utter this our business, then we will be quit of thine oath which thou hast made us to swear.

Moreover in those days the nobles of Judah sent many letters unto Tobiah, and[ the letters] of Tobiah came unto them.For[ there were] many in Judah sworn unto him, because he[ was] the son in law of Shechaniah the son of Arah; and his son Johanan had taken the daughter of Meshullam the son of Berechiah.Also they reported his good deeds before me, and uttered my words to him.[ And] Tobiah sent letters to put me in fear.
