But the other of love, knowing that I am set for the defence of the gospel.

The former proclaim Christ from selfish ambition, not sincerely, because they think they can cause trouble for me in my imprisonment.

but the latter out of love, knowing that I am appointed for the defense of the Good News.

And of this gospel I was appointed a herald and an apostle and a teacher.That is why I am suffering as I am. Yet this is no cause for shame, because I know whom I have believed, and am convinced that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him until that day.

Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves,

It is right for me to feel this way about all of you, since I have you in my heart and, whether I am in chains or defending and confirming the gospel, all of you share in God’s grace with me.

For when I preach the gospel, I cannot boast, since I am compelled to preach. Woe to me if I do not preach the gospel!If I preach voluntarily, I have a reward; if not voluntarily, I am simply discharging the trust committed to me.

I do not want you to be unaware, brothers and sisters, that I planned many times to come to you( but have been prevented from doing so until now) in order that I might have a harvest among you, just as I have had among the other Gentiles.I am obligated both to Greeks and non-Greeks, both to the wise and the foolish.That is why I am so eager to preach the gospel also to you who are in Rome.For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile.For in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed— a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written:“ The righteous will live by faith.”

At my first defense, no one came to my support, but everyone deserted me. May it not be held against them.

But make up your mind not to worry beforehand how you will defend yourselves.

At this point Festus interrupted Paul’s defense.“ You are out of your mind, Paul!” he shouted.“ Your great learning is driving you insane.”

On the contrary, they recognized that I had been entrusted with the task of preaching the gospel to the uncircumcised, just as Peter had been to the circumcised.For God, who was at work in Peter as an apostle to the circumcised, was also at work in me as an apostle to the Gentiles.
