For the Lord had told those Israelites they would surely die in the wilderness, and not one of them was left except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.

The Lord had told the Israelites at Kadesh Barnea that they would certainly die in the desert. Not one of them was left alive except Caleb and Joshua. Caleb was the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua was the son of Nun.

For the Lord had said of them,“ They shall die in the wilderness.” Not one of them was left, except Caleb the son of Jephunneh and Joshua the son of Nun.

But God was not pleased with most of them, for they were cut down in the wilderness.These things happened as examples for us, so that we will not crave evil things as they did.

Say to them,‘ As I live, says the LORD, I will surely do to you just what you have spoken in my hearing.Your dead bodies will fall in this wilderness– all those of you who were numbered, according to your full number, from twenty years old and upward, who have murmured against me.You will by no means enter into the land where I swore to settle you. The only exceptions are Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.

Notice therefore the kindness and harshness of God– harshness toward those who have fallen, but God’s kindness toward you, provided you continue in his kindness; otherwise you also will be cut off.

And against whom was God provoked for forty years? Was it not those who sinned, whose dead bodies fell in the wilderness?And to whom did he swear they would never enter into his rest, except those who were disobedient?

I, the LORD, have said,“ I will surely do so to all this evil congregation that has gathered together against me. In this wilderness they will be finished, and there they will die!”’”

Now I desire to remind you( even though you have been fully informed of these facts once for all) that Jesus, having saved the people out of the land of Egypt, later destroyed those who did not believe.

You make mankind return to the dust, and say,“ Return, O people!”Yes, in your eyes a thousand years are like yesterday that quickly passes, or like one of the divisions of the nighttime.You bring their lives to an end and they“ fall asleep.” In the morning they are like the grass that sprouts up;in the morning it glistens and sprouts up; at evening time it withers and dries up.Yes, we are consumed by your anger; we are terrified by your wrath.

they will by no means see the land that I swore to their fathers, nor will any of them who despised me see it.Only my servant Caleb, because he had a different spirit and has followed me fully– I will bring him into the land where he had gone, and his descendants will possess it.

The men of Judah approached Joshua in Gilgal, and Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite said to him,“ You know what the LORD said about you and me to Moses, the man of God, at Kadesh Barnea.I was forty years old when Moses, the LORD’s servant, sent me from Kadesh Barnea to spy on the land and I brought back to him an honest report.My countrymen who accompanied me frightened the people, but I remained loyal to the LORD my God.That day Moses made this solemn promise:‘ Surely the land on which you walked will belong to you and your descendants permanently, for you remained loyal to the LORD your God.’So now, look, the LORD has preserved my life, just as he promised, these past forty-five years since the LORD spoke these words to Moses, during which Israel traveled through the wilderness. Now look, I am today eighty-five years old.

“ Go up to this Abarim hill country, to Mount Nebo( which is in the land of Moab opposite Jericho) and look at the land of Canaan that I am giving to the Israelites as a possession.You will die on the mountain that you ascend and join your deceased ancestors, just as Aaron your brother died on Mount Hor and joined his deceased ancestors,

Now the length of time it took for us to go from Kadesh Barnea to the crossing of Wadi Zered was thirty-eight years, time for all the military men of that generation to die, just as the LORD had vowed to them.Indeed, it was the very hand of the LORD that eliminated them from within the camp until they were all gone.

The Israelites journeyed from Rameses to Sukkoth. There were about 600,000 men on foot, plus their dependants.
