摩西將這話告訴以色列人，只是他們因苦工愁煩，不肯聽他的話。

你們為何使以色列人灰心喪膽、不過去進入耶和華所賜給他們的那地呢？

他們上以實各谷，去窺探那地回來的時候，使以色列人灰心喪膽，不進入耶和華所賜給他們的地。

亞瑪力人和迦南人住在谷中，明天你們要轉回，從紅海的路往曠野去。」

不可與他們爭戰；他們的地，連腳掌可踏之處，我都不給你們，因我已將西珥山賜給以掃為業。你們要用錢向他們買糧吃，也要用錢向他們買水喝。因為耶和華－你的神在你手裏所辦的一切事上已賜福與你。你走這大曠野，他都知道了。這四十年，耶和華－你的神常與你同在，故此你一無所缺。』「於是，我們離了我們弟兄以掃子孫所住的西珥，從亞拉巴的路，經過以拉他、以旬‧迦別，轉向摩押曠野的路去。

摩西就照耶和華所吩咐的行。三人當着會眾的眼前上了何珥山。

以東王說：「你不可從我的地經過，免得我帶刀出去攻擊你。」以色列人說：「我們要走大道上去；我們和牲畜若喝你的水，必給你價值。不求別的，只求你容我們步行過去。」以東王說：「你們不可經過！」就率領許多人出來，要用強硬的手攻擊以色列人。這樣，以東王不肯容以色列人從他的境界過去。於是他們轉去，離開他。以色列全會眾從加低斯起行，到了何珥山。耶和華在附近以東邊界的何珥山上曉諭摩西、亞倫說：

免得有人被諸般患難搖動。因為你們自己知道，我們受患難原是命定的。我們在你們那裏的時候，預先告訴你們，我們必受患難，以後果然應驗了，你們也知道。

堅固門徒的心，勸他們恆守所信的道；又說：「我們進入神的國，必須經歷許多艱難。」

至於你們，要轉回，從紅海的路往曠野去。』
