They quarreled with Moses and said,“ If only we had died when our brothers fell dead before the Lord!

The people blamed Moses and said,“ If only we had died in the Lord’s presence with our brothers!

Then the people argued with Moses and spoke, saying,“ If only we had perished when our brothers perished before the Lord!

And the people strove with Moses, and spake, saying, Would that we had died when our brethren died before Jehovah!

So the people complained to Moses,“ Give us water to drink.”“ Why are you complaining to me?” Moses replied to them.“ Why are you testing the LORD?”

Just as he finished speaking all these words, the ground beneath them split open.The earth opened its mouth and swallowed them and their households, all Korah’s people, and all their possessions.They went down alive into Sheol with all that belonged to them. The earth closed over them, and they vanished from the assembly.At their cries, all the people of Israel who were around them fled because they thought,“ The earth may swallow us too!”Fire also came out from the LORD and consumed the 250 men who were presenting the incense.

Then the whole community broke into loud cries, and the people wept that night.All the Israelites complained about Moses and Aaron, and the whole community told them,“ If only we had died in the land of Egypt, or if only we had died in this wilderness!

But those who died from the plague numbered 14,700, in addition to those who died because of the Korah incident.

Now the people began complaining openly before the LORD about hardship. When the LORD heard, his anger burned, and fire from the LORD blazed among them and consumed the outskirts of the camp.

So the men Moses sent to scout out the land, and who returned and incited the entire community to complain about him by spreading a negative report about the land—those men who spread the negative report about the land were struck down by the LORD.

While the meat was still between their teeth, before it was chewed, the LORD’s anger burned against the people, and the LORD struck them with a very severe plague.So they named that place Kibroth-hattaavah, because there they buried the people who had craved the meat.

The entire Israelite community grumbled against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness.The Israelites said to them,“ If only we had died by the LORD’s hand in the land of Egypt, when we sat by pots of meat and ate all the bread we wanted. Instead, you brought us into this wilderness to make this whole assembly die of hunger!”

For that night did not shut the doors of my mother’s womb, and hide sorrow from my eyes.Why was I not stillborn; why didn’t I die as I came from the womb?

Those slain by the sword are better off than those slain by hunger, who waste away, pierced with pain because the fields lack produce.
