Again they answered:“ You may not pass through.” Then Edom came out against them with a large and powerful army.

Again the people of Edom answered,“ We won’t let you pass through here.” Then the people of Edom marched out against them. They came with a large and powerful army.

But he said,“ You shall not pass through.” And Edom came out against them with a large army and with a strong force.

But the king of Edom replied,“ Stay out! You may not pass through our land.” With that he mobilized his army and marched out against them with an imposing force.

Yet Edom insisted,“ You may not travel through.” And they came out to confront them with a large force of heavily-armed people.

But he said,“ You shall not pass through.” And Edom came out against him with a heavy force and a strong hand.

Then he said,“ You shall not pass through.” So Edom came out against them with many men and with a strong hand.

And he said, Thou shalt not pass through. And Edom came out against him with much people, and with a strong hand.

Yet Edom insisted,“ You must not travel through.” And they came out to confront them with a large force of heavily-armed people.

然後派遣使者去見以東王，說，『求你讓我們經過你的領土。』以東王卻不答應。他們又派遣使者去見摩押王，摩押王也不答應。於是，以色列人就住在加低斯。

耶和華說：「以東人三番四次地犯罪，我必不收回對他們的懲罰，因為他們拔刀追趕自己的弟兄，沒有半點憐憫之心；他們怒氣不息，永懷憤怒。

以東王卻說：「你們不可從我這裡經過，否則我必兵戎相見。」

但西宏不信任以色列人，拒絕了他們的請求，並招聚全軍駐紮在雅雜，攻打他們。

以掃因為父親把祝福給了雅各，就對雅各懷恨在心，暗自思量說：「父親已經不久人世，他死後，我要把雅各殺掉！」

「因你曾殘暴地對待同胞兄弟雅各，你必蒙羞，永遭毀滅。外族人掠奪雅各的財物，攻入耶路撒冷抽籤分贓時，你竟然袖手旁觀，就像他們的同夥一樣。你的親族遭難之日，你不該幸災樂禍；猶大人被滅的日子，你不該興高采烈；他們遭難的日子，你不該口出狂言；我子民遭難的日子，你不該闖進他們的城；他們遭難的日子，你不該幸災樂禍；他們遭難的日子，你不該趁火打劫；你不該站在路口截殺那些逃亡者；他們遭難的日子，你不該把倖存者交給仇敵。「耶和華懲罰萬國的日子近了。必按你的所作所為報應你，你的惡行必落到自己頭上。

因為你永懷仇恨，在以色列人遭遇危難、因罪惡受盡刑罰的時候，把他們交在刀下。所以主耶和華說，我憑我的永恆起誓，你既然不憎恨殺人流血之事，殺人流血之事必臨到你。我要使西珥山荒涼不堪，消滅一切來往此地的人，我要使喪身刀下的人遍佈你的高山、丘陵、山谷和溪流。我要使你永遠荒廢，你的城邑杳無人跡，這樣你就知道我是耶和華。「『因為你曾說，猶大和以色列必歸我，即使上帝在那裡，我們也要吞併他們。所以主耶和華說，我憑我的永恆起誓，你憎恨他們，滿腹怒氣和嫉妒，我也必這樣對待你。我審判你的時候，以色列人就會認識我。

我愛和平，但我倡導和平的時候，他們卻要戰爭。

報信的人回到雅各那裡，說：「我們到了你哥哥以掃那裡，他正帶著四百人前來見你。」
