正如上帝曾說：「我在憤怒中起誓說，『他們絕不可進入我的安息。』」但我們這些已經信的人能夠進入祂的安息。其實造物之工自創世以來就已經完成了，因為聖經論到第七日時說：「第七日，上帝歇了一切的工。」又說：「他們絕不可進入我的安息。」既然最終會有人進入安息，而那些從前聽過福音的人因為不信沒能進去，上帝就另定了一個日子，稱之為「今日」。正如多年後，祂藉著大衛說：「你們今日若聽見祂的聲音，不可心裡頑固。」如果當初約書亞已經讓他們得到了安息，上帝就不必另定一個日子了。這樣說來，必定另有一個安息日為上帝的子民存留，使他們可以真正安歇。因為人進入上帝的安息，就是歇了自己的工作，好像上帝歇了祂的工作一樣。因此，我們要竭力進入那安息，免得重蹈他們的覆轍，因不順服而倒斃。

軍隊回營後，以色列的長老說：「為什麼今天耶和華使我們敗在非利士人手下？我們從示羅把耶和華的約櫃抬來吧，讓它與我們同去，好從仇敵手中救我們。」

耶和華曾對他們說：「這是安歇之地，讓疲乏的人安歇吧。這是安歇之地。」他們卻不肯聽。

摩西上山到上帝那裡，耶和華從山上呼喚他說：「你告訴雅各家，告訴以色列人，

願賜平安的上帝，就是那位憑著立永恆之約的血使群羊的大牧人——我主耶穌從死裡復活的上帝，

在以色列人眼中，耶和華的榮耀在山上好像烈火。摩西上到山上，走進雲中，在那裡停留了四十晝夜。

「把這律法書放在你們的上帝耶和華的約櫃旁，作為指控你們的證據。

看啊，天下之主的約櫃要在你們前面過約旦河。現在，你們要從以色列的十二支派中選出十二個人來，每支派選一人。當祭司抬著天下之主——耶和華的約櫃一踏進約旦河，往下流的河水必會止住，形成一道水堤。」那時是收割的季節，河水高漲，淹沒兩岸。民眾拔營準備過河的時候，抬約櫃的祭司走在前頭，當他們的腳剛一踏進河水，

因此我在怒中起誓說，『他們絕不可進入我的安息！』」

耶和華說：「天是我的寶座，地是我的腳凳，你們要為我造怎樣的殿宇？哪裡可作我的安歇之處？

那時，我上山去接受耶和華與你們立約的石版，在山上待了四十晝夜，不吃也不喝。

那時，上帝的約櫃就在那裡，亞倫的孫子、以利亞撒的兒子非尼哈任祭司。以色列人求問耶和華，說：「我們應該再去攻打我們的同胞便雅憫人嗎？還是退兵？」耶和華說：「去攻打吧，因為明天我必把他們交在你們手中。」

看啊，我要從北方，從地極招聚他們，其中有瞎子、跛子、孕婦和產婦，他們要成群結隊地回到這裡。我必引領他們回來，他們必一路含淚禱告。我要使他們走在溪水邊，行在平坦的路上，他們必不會跌倒，因為我是以色列的父親，以法蓮是我的長子。

耶和華說：「你們要站在路口觀望，尋訪古道，找到正路並行在其上，便會得到心靈的安寧。」但你們卻說：「我們拒絕這樣做。」

你們在地上繁衍昌盛的時候，人們不會再提及耶和華的約櫃，不會再把它放在心上，不會再感到需要它，也不會再造一個。這是耶和華說的。

耶和華回答他說：「我必親自與你同去，使你平安穩妥。」摩西說：「你若不與我們同去，就不要讓我們離開這裡。

「所有勞苦困乏、背負重擔的人啊，到我這裡來吧！我要賜給你們安息。我心柔和謙卑，你們要負我的軛，向我學習，這樣你們的心靈就必得享安息。因為我的軛容易負，我的擔子很輕省。」

以色列人就從西奈曠野啟行，直到雲彩停在巴蘭曠野時才停下來。

過了三天，官長走遍各營，吩咐民眾說：「你們看見做祭司的利未人抬著你們上帝耶和華的約櫃出發時，就要起身跟在後面。這樣，你們就會知道路，因為你們從來沒有走過這條路。但你們要跟約櫃保持九百米的距離，不要走近約櫃。」約書亞又對民眾說：「你們要潔淨自己，因為明天耶和華要在你們當中行奇事。」約書亞又對祭司說：「抬起約櫃，率領民眾過河吧！」他們就抬起約櫃，走在民眾前面。

你們就告訴他們，『約旦河水在耶和華的約櫃前曾經被截斷，當約櫃過河的時候，河水被截斷了。這些石頭要在以色列人當中作為永久的紀念。』」

那日我向他們起誓，要帶領他們離開埃及，到我為他們預備的奶蜜之鄉，世上最佳美的地方。
