Then I consulted with myself, and contended with the nobles and the rulers, and said to them,“ You exact usury, everyone of his brother.” I held a great assembly against them.

“ If you lend money to one of my people among you who is needy, do not treat it like a business deal; charge no interest.

Do not take interest or any profit from them, but fear your God, so that they may continue to live among you.

Do not charge a fellow Israelite interest, whether on money or food or anything else that may earn interest.You may charge a foreigner interest, but not a fellow Israelite, so that the Lord your God may bless you in everything you put your hand to in the land you are entering to possess.

“‘ Do not pervert justice; do not show partiality to the poor or favoritism to the great, but judge your neighbor fairly.

This is how it is to be done: Every creditor shall cancel any loan they have made to a fellow Israelite. They shall not require payment from anyone among their own people, because the Lord’s time for canceling debts has been proclaimed.You may require payment from a foreigner, but you must cancel any debt your fellow Israelite owes you.

He told them,“ Consider carefully what you do, because you are not judging for mere mortals but for the Lord, who is with you whenever you give a verdict.Now let the fear of the Lord be on you. Judge carefully, for with the Lord our God there is no injustice or partiality or bribery.”

who lends money to the poor without interest; who does not accept a bribe against the innocent. Whoever does these things will never be shaken.

When you make a loan of any kind to your neighbor, do not go into their house to get what is offered to you as a pledge.Stay outside and let the neighbor to whom you are making the loan bring the pledge out to you.If the neighbor is poor, do not go to sleep with their pledge in your possession.Return their cloak by sunset so that your neighbor may sleep in it. Then they will thank you, and it will be regarded as a righteous act in the sight of the Lord your God.

In you are people who accept bribes to shed blood; you take interest and make a profit from the poor. You extort unjust gain from your neighbors. And you have forgotten me, declares the Sovereign Lord.

My heart says of you,“ Seek his face!” Your face, Lord, I will seek.

Tremble and do not sin; when you are on your beds, search your hearts and be silent.

Better is open rebuke than hidden love.

These, then, are the things you should teach. Encourage and rebuke with all authority. Do not let anyone despise you.

God presides in the great assembly; he renders judgment among the“ gods”:“ How long will you defend the unjust and show partiality to the wicked?Defend the weak and the fatherless; uphold the cause of the poor and the oppressed.Rescue the weak and the needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked.

So from now on we regard no one from a worldly point of view. Though we once regarded Christ in this way, we do so no longer.

Lord, who may dwell in your sacred tent? Who may live on your holy mountain?

If they still refuse to listen, tell it to the church; and if they refuse to listen even to the church, treat them as you would a pagan or a tax collector.

“‘ This is what the Sovereign Lord says: You have gone far enough, princes of Israel! Give up your violence and oppression and do what is just and right. Stop dispossessing my people, declares the Sovereign Lord.
