Then I consulted with myself, and contended with the nobles and the rulers, and said to them,“ You exact usury, everyone of his brother.” I held a great assembly against them.

“ Suppose you lend money to one of my people among you who is in need. Then do not treat it like a business deal. Do not charge any interest at all.

Do not charge them interest of any kind. Instead, have respect for God. Then those who have become poor can continue to live among you.

Don’t charge your own people any interest. Don’t charge them when they borrow money, food or anything else.You can charge interest to people from another country. But don’t charge your own people. Then the Lord your God will bless you in everything you do. He will bless you in the land you are entering to take as your own.

“‘ Do not make something wrong appear to be right. Treat poor people and rich people in the same way. Do not favor one person over another. Instead, judge everyone fairly.

Have you made a loan to one of your own people? Then forgive what is owed to you. You can’t require that person to pay you back. The Lord’ s time to forgive what is owed has been announced.You can require someone from another nation to pay you back. But you must forgive what any of your own people owes you.

He told the judges,“ Think carefully about what you do. After all, you aren’t judging for human beings. You are judging for the Lord. He’s with you every time you make a decision.Have respect for the Lord. Judge carefully. He is always right. He treats everyone the same. Our God doesn’t want his judges to take money from people who want special favors.”

They lend their money to poor people without charging interest. They don’t accept money to harm those who aren’t guilty. Anyone who lives like that will always be secure.

Suppose your neighbor borrows something from you. And he offers you something to keep until you get paid back. Then don’t go into their house to get it.Stay outside. Let the neighbor bring it out to you.The neighbor might be poor. You might be given their coat to keep until you get paid back. Don’t go to sleep while you still have it.Return it before the sun goes down. They need it to sleep in and will thank you for returning it. The Lord your God will see it and know that you have done the right thing.

You accept money from people who want special favors. You do this to spill someone’s blood. You charge interest to poor people when you lend them money. You make money from them. You get rich by cheating your neighbors. And you have forgotten me,” announces the Lord and King.

My heart says,“ Seek him!” Lord, I will seek you.

Tremble and do not sin. When you are in bed, look deep down inside yourself and be silent.

Being warned openly is better than being loved in secret.

These are the things you should teach. Encourage people and give them hope. Correct them with full authority. Don’t let anyone look down on you.

But those elders who are sinning should be corrected in front of everyone. This will be a warning to the others.

So from now on we don’t look at anyone the way the world does. At one time we looked at Christ in that way. But we don’t anymore.

Lord, who can live in your sacred tent? Who can stay on your holy mountain?

But what if they also refuse to listen to the witnesses? Then tell it to the church. And what if they refuse to listen even to the church? Then don’t treat them as a brother or sister. Treat them as you would treat an ungodly person or a tax collector.
