I myself, as well as my brothers and my workers, have been lending the people money and grain, but now let us stop this business of charging interest.

After thinking it over, I spoke out against these nobles and officials. I told them,“ You are hurting your own relatives by charging interest when they borrow money!” Then I called a public meeting to deal with the problem.

So we are Christ’s ambassadors; God is making his appeal through us. We speak for Christ when we plead,“ Come back to God!”

That is why I am boldly asking a favor of you. I could demand it in the name of Christ because it is the right thing for you to do.But because of our love, I prefer simply to ask you. Consider this as a request from me— Paul, an old man and now also a prisoner for the sake of Christ Jesus.

Because we understand our fearful responsibility to the Lord, we work hard to persuade others. God knows we are sincere, and I hope you know this, too.

What sorrow awaits you who lie awake at night, thinking up evil plans. You rise at dawn and hurry to carry them out, simply because you have the power to do so.

As God’s partners, we beg you not to accept this marvelous gift of God’s kindness and then ignore it.

If you support others who preach to you, shouldn’t we have an even greater right to be supported? But we have never used this right. We would rather put up with anything than be an obstacle to the Good News about Christ.Don’t you realize that those who work in the temple get their meals from the offerings brought to the temple? And those who serve at the altar get a share of the sacrificial offerings.In the same way, the Lord ordered that those who preach the Good News should be supported by those who benefit from it.Yet I have never used any of these rights. And I am not writing this to suggest that I want to start now. In fact, I would rather die than lose my right to boast about preaching without charge.Yet preaching the Good News is not something I can boast about. I am compelled by God to do it. How terrible for me if I didn’t preach the Good News!If I were doing this on my own initiative, I would deserve payment. But I have no choice, for God has given me this sacred trust.What then is my pay? It is the opportunity to preach the Good News without charging anyone. That’s why I never demand my rights when I preach the Good News.

and lends money at excessive interest. Should such a sinful person live? No! He must die and must take full blame.

Those who lend money without charging interest, and who cannot be bribed to lie about the innocent. Such people will stand firm forever.

He grants loans without interest, stays away from injustice, is honest and fair when judging others,

He replied,“ Collect no more taxes than the government requires.”“ What should we do?” asked some soldiers. John replied,“ Don’t extort money or make false accusations. And be content with your pay.”
