Therefore I stationed some of the people behind the lowest points of the wall at the exposed places, posting them by families, with their swords, spears and bows.

Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil.For we are not fighting against flesh and blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.Therefore, put on every piece of God’s armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil. Then after the battle you will still be standing firm.Stand your ground, putting on the belt of truth and the body armor of God’s righteousness.For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News so that you will be fully prepared.In addition to all of these, hold up the shield of faith to stop the fiery arrows of the devil.Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere.And pray for me, too. Ask God to give me the right words so I can boldly explain God’s mysterious plan that the Good News is for Jews and Gentiles alike.I am in chains now, still preaching this message as God’s ambassador. So pray that I will keep on speaking boldly for him, as I should.

When Hezekiah realized that Sennacherib also intended to attack Jerusalem,he consulted with his officials and military advisers, and they decided to stop the flow of the springs outside the city.They organized a huge work crew to stop the flow of the springs, cutting off the brook that ran through the fields. For they said,“ Why should the kings of Assyria come here and find plenty of water?”Then Hezekiah worked hard at repairing all the broken sections of the wall, erecting towers, and constructing a second wall outside the first. He also reinforced the supporting terraces in the City of David and manufactured large numbers of weapons and shields.He appointed military officers over the people and assembled them before him in the square at the city gate. Then Hezekiah encouraged them by saying:“ Be strong and courageous! Don’t be afraid or discouraged because of the king of Assyria or his mighty army, for there is a power far greater on our side!He may have a great army, but they are merely men. We have the Lord our God to help us and to fight our battles for us!” Hezekiah’s words greatly encouraged the people.

Jacob stayed where he was for the night. Then he selected these gifts from his possessions to present to his brother, Esau:200 female goats, 20 male goats, 200 ewes, 20 rams,30 female camels with their young, 40 cows, 10 bulls, 20 female donkeys, and 10 male donkeys.He divided these animals into herds and assigned each to different servants. Then he told his servants,“ Go ahead of me with the animals, but keep some distance between the herds.”He gave these instructions to the men leading the first group:“ When my brother, Esau, meets you, he will ask,‘ Whose servants are you? Where are you going? Who owns these animals?’You must reply,‘ They belong to your servant Jacob, but they are a gift for his master Esau. Look, he is coming right behind us.’”Jacob gave the same instructions to the second and third herdsmen and to all who followed behind the herds:“ You must say the same thing to Esau when you meet him.And be sure to say,‘ Look, your servant Jacob is right behind us.’” Jacob thought,“ I will try to appease him by sending gifts ahead of me. When I see him in person, perhaps he will be friendly to me.”

Look, it is Solomon’s carriage, surrounded by sixty heroic men, the best of Israel’s soldiers.They are all skilled swordsmen, experienced warriors. Each wears a sword on his thigh, ready to defend the king against an attack in the night.
