On that day the Book of Moses was read aloud in the hearing of the people and there it was found written that no Ammonite or Moabite should ever be admitted into the assembly of God,

And they stood up in their place, and read in the book of the law of the LORD their God[ one] fourth part of the day; and[ another] fourth part they confessed, and worshipped the LORD their God.

In those days also saw I Jews[ that] had married wives of Ashdod, of Ammon,[ and] of Moab:

When all Israel is come to appear before the LORD thy God in the place which he shall choose, thou shalt read this law before all Israel in their hearing.Gather the people together, men, and women, and children, and thy stranger that[ is] within thy gates, that they may hear, and that they may learn, and fear the LORD your God, and observe to do all the words of this law:

And the king went up into the house of the LORD, and all the men of Judah and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem with him, and the priests, and the prophets, and all the people, both small and great: and he read in their ears all the words of the book of the covenant which was found in the house of the LORD.

The word of the LORD came again unto me, saying,Son of man, set thy face against the Ammonites, and prophesy against them;And say unto the Ammonites, Hear the word of the Lord GOD; Thus saith the Lord GOD; Because thou saidst, Aha, against my sanctuary, when it was profaned; and against the land of Israel, when it was desolate; and against the house of Judah, when they went into captivity;Behold, therefore I will deliver thee to the men of the east for a possession, and they shall set their palaces in thee, and make their dwellings in thee: they shall eat thy fruit, and they shall drink thy milk.And I will make Rabbah a stable for camels, and the Ammonites a couchingplace for flocks: and ye shall know that I[ am] the LORD.For thus saith the Lord GOD; Because thou hast clapped[ thine] hands, and stamped with the feet, and rejoiced in heart with all thy despite against the land of Israel;Behold, therefore I will stretch out mine hand upon thee, and will deliver thee for a spoil to the heathen; and I will cut thee off from the people, and I will cause thee to perish out of the countries: I will destroy thee; and thou shalt know that I[ am] the LORD.Thus saith the Lord GOD; Because that Moab and Seir do say, Behold, the house of Judah[ is] like unto all the heathen;Therefore, behold, I will open the side of Moab from the cities, from his cities[ which are] on his frontiers, the glory of the country, Bethjeshimoth, Baalmeon, and Kiriathaim,Unto the men of the east with the Ammonites, and will give them in possession, that the Ammonites may not be remembered among the nations.And I will execute judgments upon Moab; and they shall know that I[ am] the LORD.

And he read therein before the street that[ was] before the water gate from the morning until midday, before the men and the women, and those that could understand; and the ears of all the people[ were attentive] unto the book of the law.And Ezra the scribe stood upon a pulpit of wood, which they had made for the purpose; and beside him stood Mattithiah, and Shema, and Anaiah, and Urijah, and Hilkiah, and Maaseiah, on his right hand; and on his left hand, Pedaiah, and Mishael, and Malchiah, and Hashum, and Hashbadana, Zechariah,[ and] Meshullam.And Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people;( for he was above all the people;) and when he opened it, all the people stood up:And Ezra blessed the LORD, the great God. And all the people answered, Amen, Amen, with lifting up their hands: and they bowed their heads, and worshipped the LORD with[ their] faces to the ground.Also Jeshua, and Bani, and Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodijah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, Pelaiah, and the Levites, caused the people to understand the law: and the people[ stood] in their place.So they read in the book in the law of God distinctly, and gave the sense, and caused[ them] to understand the reading.

He said unto him, What is written in the law? how readest thou?

Thus saith the LORD; For three transgressions of the children of Ammon, and for four, I will not turn away[ the punishment] thereof; because they have ripped up the women with child of Gilead, that they might enlarge their border:But I will kindle a fire in the wall of Rabbah, and it shall devour the palaces thereof, with shouting in the day of battle, with a tempest in the day of the whirlwind:And their king shall go into captivity, he and his princes together, saith the LORD.Thus saith the LORD; For three transgressions of Moab, and for four, I will not turn away[ the punishment] thereof; because he burned the bones of the king of Edom into lime:But I will send a fire upon Moab, and it shall devour the palaces of Kerioth: and Moab shall die with tumult, with shouting,[ and] with the sound of the trumpet:And I will cut off the judge from the midst thereof, and will slay all the princes thereof with him, saith the LORD.

When Sanballat the Horonite, and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, heard[ of it], it grieved them exceedingly that there was come a man to seek the welfare of the children of Israel.

For Moses of old time hath in every city them that preach him, being read in the synagogues every sabbath day.

The burden of Moab. Because in the night Ar of Moab is laid waste,[ and] brought to silence; because in the night Kir of Moab is laid waste,[ and] brought to silence;He is gone up to Bajith, and to Dibon, the high places, to weep: Moab shall howl over Nebo, and over Medeba: on all their heads[ shall be] baldness,[ and] every beard cut off.In their streets they shall gird themselves with sackcloth: on the tops of their houses, and in their streets, every one shall howl, weeping abundantly.And Heshbon shall cry, and Elealeh: their voice shall be heard[ even] unto Jahaz: therefore the armed soldiers of Moab shall cry out; his life shall be grievous unto him.My heart shall cry out for Moab; his fugitives[ shall flee] unto Zoar, an heifer of three years old: for by the mounting up of Luhith with weeping shall they go it up; for in the way of Horonaim they shall raise up a cry of destruction.For the waters of Nimrim shall be desolate: for the hay is withered away, the grass faileth, there is no green thing.Therefore the abundance they have gotten, and that which they have laid up, shall they carry away to the brook of the willows.For the cry is gone round about the borders of Moab; the howling thereof unto Eglaim, and the howling thereof unto Beerelim.For the waters of Dimon shall be full of blood: for I will bring more upon Dimon, lions upon him that escapeth of Moab, and upon the remnant of the land.

Against Moab thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Woe unto Nebo! for it is spoiled: Kiriathaim is confounded[ and] taken: Misgab is confounded and dismayed.[ There shall be] no more praise of Moab: in Heshbon they have devised evil against it; come, and let us cut it off from[ being] a nation. Also thou shalt be cut down, O Madmen; the sword shall pursue thee.A voice of crying[ shall be] from Horonaim, spoiling and great destruction.Moab is destroyed; her little ones have caused a cry to be heard.For in the going up of Luhith continual weeping shall go up; for in the going down of Horonaim the enemies have heard a cry of destruction.Flee, save your lives, and be like the heath in the wilderness.For because thou hast trusted in thy works and in thy treasures, thou shalt also be taken: and Chemosh shall go forth into captivity[ with] his priests and his princes together.And the spoiler shall come upon every city, and no city shall escape: the valley also shall perish, and the plain shall be destroyed, as the LORD hath spoken.Give wings unto Moab, that it may flee and get away: for the cities thereof shall be desolate, without any to dwell therein.Cursed[ be] he that doeth the work of the LORD deceitfully, and cursed[ be] he that keepeth back his sword from blood.Moab hath been at ease from his youth, and he hath settled on his lees, and hath not been emptied from vessel to vessel, neither hath he gone into captivity: therefore his taste remained in him, and his scent is not changed.Therefore, behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will send unto him wanderers, that shall cause him to wander, and shall empty his vessels, and break their bottles.And Moab shall be ashamed of Chemosh, as the house of Israel was ashamed of Bethel their confidence.How say ye, We[ are] mighty and strong men for the war?Moab is spoiled, and gone up[ out of] her cities, and his chosen young men are gone down to the slaughter, saith the King, whose name[ is] the LORD of hosts.The calamity of Moab[ is] near to come, and his affliction hasteth fast.All ye that are about him, bemoan him; and all ye that know his name, say, How is the strong staff broken,[ and] the beautiful rod!Thou daughter that dost inhabit Dibon, come down from[ thy] glory, and sit in thirst; for the spoiler of Moab shall come upon thee,[ and] he shall destroy thy strong holds.O inhabitant of Aroer, stand by the way, and espy; ask him that fleeth, and her that escapeth,[ and] say, What is done?Moab is confounded; for it is broken down: howl and cry; tell ye it in Arnon, that Moab is spoiled,And judgment is come upon the plain country; upon Holon, and upon Jahazah, and upon Mephaath,And upon Dibon, and upon Nebo, and upon Bethdiblathaim,And upon Kiriathaim, and upon Bethgamul, and upon Bethmeon,And upon Kerioth, and upon Bozrah, and upon all the cities of the land of Moab, far or near.The horn of Moab is cut off, and his arm is broken, saith the LORD.Make ye him drunken: for he magnified[ himself] against the LORD: Moab also shall wallow in his vomit, and he also shall be in derision.For was not Israel a derision unto thee? was he found among thieves? for since thou spakest of him, thou skippedst for joy.O ye that dwell in Moab, leave the cities, and dwell in the rock, and be like the dove[ that] maketh her nest in the sides of the hole’s mouth.We have heard the pride of Moab,( he is exceeding proud) his loftiness, and his arrogancy, and his pride, and the haughtiness of his heart.I know his wrath, saith the LORD; but[ it shall] not[ be] so; his lies shall not so effect[ it].Therefore will I howl for Moab, and I will cry out for all Moab;[ mine heart] shall mourn for the men of Kirheres.O vine of Sibmah, I will weep for thee with the weeping of Jazer: thy plants are gone over the sea, they reach[ even] to the sea of Jazer: the spoiler is fallen upon thy summer fruits and upon thy vintage.And joy and gladness is taken from the plentiful field, and from the land of Moab; and I have caused wine to fail from the winepresses: none shall tread with shouting;[ their] shouting[ shall be] no shouting.From the cry of Heshbon[ even] unto Elealeh,[ and even] unto Jahaz, have they uttered their voice, from Zoar[ even] unto Horonaim,[ as] an heifer of three years old: for the waters also of Nimrim shall be desolate.Moreover I will cause to cease in Moab, saith the LORD, him that offereth in the high places, and him that burneth incense to his gods.Therefore mine heart shall sound for Moab like pipes, and mine heart shall sound like pipes for the men of Kirheres: because the riches[ that] he hath gotten are perished.For every head[ shall be] bald, and every beard clipped: upon all the hands[ shall be] cuttings, and upon the loins sackcloth.[ There shall be] lamentation generally upon all the housetops of Moab, and in the streets thereof: for I have broken Moab like a vessel wherein[ is] no pleasure, saith the LORD.They shall howl,[ saying], How is it broken down! how hath Moab turned the back with shame! so shall Moab be a derision and a dismaying to all them about him.For thus saith the LORD; Behold, he shall fly as an eagle, and shall spread his wings over Moab.Kerioth is taken, and the strong holds are surprised, and the mighty men’s hearts in Moab at that day shall be as the heart of a woman in her pangs.And Moab shall be destroyed from[ being] a people, because he hath magnified[ himself] against the LORD.Fear, and the pit, and the snare,[ shall be] upon thee, O inhabitant of Moab, saith the LORD.He that fleeth from the fear shall fall into the pit; and he that getteth up out of the pit shall be taken in the snare: for I will bring upon it,[ even] upon Moab, the year of their visitation, saith the LORD.They that fled stood under the shadow of Heshbon because of the force: but a fire shall come forth out of Heshbon, and a flame from the midst of Sihon, and shall devour the corner of Moab, and the crown of the head of the tumultuous ones.Woe be unto thee, O Moab! the people of Chemosh perisheth: for thy sons are taken captives, and thy daughters captives.Yet will I bring again the captivity of Moab in the latter days, saith the LORD. Thus far[ is] the judgment of Moab.Concerning the Ammonites, thus saith the LORD; Hath Israel no sons? hath he no heir? why[ then] doth their king inherit Gad, and his people dwell in his cities?Therefore, behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will cause an alarm of war to be heard in Rabbah of the Ammonites; and it shall be a desolate heap, and her daughters shall be burned with fire: then shall Israel be heir unto them that were his heirs, saith the LORD.Howl, O Heshbon, for Ai is spoiled: cry, ye daughters of Rabbah, gird you with sackcloth; lament, and run to and fro by the hedges; for their king shall go into captivity,[ and] his priests and his princes together.Wherefore gloriest thou in the valleys, thy flowing valley, O backsliding daughter? that trusted in her treasures,[ saying], Who shall come unto me?Behold, I will bring a fear upon thee, saith the Lord GOD of hosts, from all those that be about thee; and ye shall be driven out every man right forth; and none shall gather up him that wandereth.And afterward I will bring again the captivity of the children of Ammon, saith the LORD.

Gebal, and Ammon, and Amalek; the Philistines with the inhabitants of Tyre;Assur also is joined with them: they have holpen the children of Lot. Selah.Do unto them as[ unto] the Midianites; as[ to] Sisera, as[ to] Jabin, at the brook of Kison:

Seek ye out of the book of the LORD, and read: no one of these shall fail, none shall want her mate: for my mouth it hath commanded, and his spirit it hath gathered them.

But when Sanballat the Horonite, and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, and Geshem the Arabian, heard[ it], they laughed us to scorn, and despised us, and said, What[ is] this thing that ye do? will ye rebel against the king?

And after the reading of the law and the prophets the rulers of the synagogue sent unto them, saying,[ Ye] men[ and] brethren, if ye have any word of exhortation for the people, say on.

Now Tobiah the Ammonite[ was] by him, and he said, Even that which they build, if a fox go up, he shall even break down their stone wall.

And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read.And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written,The Spirit of the Lord[ is] upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.
