我便禁食，身披麻衣，頭蒙灰塵，向主上帝禱告祈求。

要與喜樂的人同樂，與哀哭的人同哭。

你必憐憫錫安，因為現在是你恩待她的時候了，時候到了。你的僕人們喜愛城中的石頭，憐惜城中的塵土。

報信的答道：「以色列人被非利士人擊潰，傷亡慘重，你的兩個兒子何弗尼及非尼哈都死了，上帝的約櫃也被擄走了。」以利年老體胖，聽到約櫃被擄去，就從門邊的座位上向後跌倒，頸斷身亡。他做士師審理以色列人的事務共四十年。以利的兒媳婦、非尼哈的妻子當時懷孕在身，接近產期。她聽說上帝的約櫃被擄、公公和丈夫都死了，就突然陣痛，生下了孩子。在她彌留之際，身旁的婦人對她說：「不要怕，你生了一個男孩。」但她既不理會，也不回答。她給孩子取名叫以迦博，意思是：「榮耀離開以色列了」。這是因為上帝的約櫃被擄走，她的公公和丈夫都死了。她說：「榮耀離開了以色列，因為上帝的約櫃已經被擄走了。」

「我必招聚你那裡因不能守節期而憂愁的人，使你不再蒙受羞辱。

約拿回答說：「我是希伯來人，我敬畏耶和華，祂是創造海洋陸地、掌管諸天的上帝。」

要同伴祈求天上的上帝施憐憫，顯明這奧秘，以免他們和其他巴比倫的智者一起被殺。

「他們回答說，『我們是天地之上帝的僕人，我們正在重建這座多年前由以色列的一位偉大君王建造的殿。但因為我們的祖先觸怒了天上的上帝，上帝把他們交在迦勒底人——巴比倫王尼布甲尼撒的手中，他摧毀了這殿，把他們擄到巴比倫。

一聽到這些，我便撕裂衣服和外袍，拔掉頭髮和鬍鬚，驚懼地坐下。
