报信的答道：“以色列人被非利士人击溃，伤亡惨重，你的两个儿子何弗尼及非尼哈都死了，上帝的约柜也被掳走了。”以利年老体胖，听到约柜被掳去，就从门边的座位上向后跌倒，颈断身亡。他做士师审理以色列人的事务共四十年。以利的儿媳妇、非尼哈的妻子当时怀孕在身，接近产期。她听说上帝的约柜被掳、公公和丈夫都死了，就突然阵痛，生下了孩子。在她弥留之际，身旁的妇人对她说：“不要怕，你生了一个男孩。”但她既不理会，也不回答。她给孩子取名叫以迦博，意思是：“荣耀离开以色列了”。这是因为上帝的约柜被掳走，她的公公和丈夫都死了。她说：“荣耀离开了以色列，因为上帝的约柜已经被掳走了。”

“我必招聚你那里因不能守节期而忧愁的人，使你不再蒙受羞辱。

约拿回答说：“我是希伯来人，我敬畏耶和华，祂是创造海洋陆地、掌管诸天的上帝。”

要同伴祈求天上的上帝施怜悯，显明这奥秘，以免他们和其他巴比伦的智者一起被杀。

“他们回答说，‘我们是天地之上帝的仆人，我们正在重建这座多年前由以色列的一位伟大君王建造的殿。但因为我们的祖先触怒了天上的上帝，上帝把他们交在迦勒底人——巴比伦王尼布甲尼撒的手中，他摧毁了这殿，把他们掳到巴比伦。

一听到这些，我便撕裂衣服和外袍，拔掉头发和胡须，惊惧地坐下。
