初、希律為弟腓立妻希羅底故、執約翰繫於獄、蓋約翰曾諫希律曰、爾納此婦、非宜也、希律欲殺之、惟懼眾、蓋眾尊約翰為先知也、適值希律誕辰、希羅底女舞於眾前、希律喜之、遂發誓許以所求者必賜之、女為母所唆、求希律曰、請以施洗約翰之首盛於盤、在此予我、王憂、奈已發誓、又因同席者在、乃命予之、遣人斬約翰於獄、盛首於盤、攜至予女、女攜於母、

但我告爾、以利亞已至、奈人未之識、且任意待之、人子亦將如是受其害、門徒方悟耶穌所言、乃指施洗約翰也、○

耶穌聲名遍揚、希律王聞之、曰、此施洗約翰由死復活、故能行此奇跡也、有曰、是以利亞、有曰、是先知、猶古先知之一、惟希律聞之曰、是我所斬之約翰由死復活矣、初希律遣人執約翰、繫之於獄、為其弟腓立妻希羅底之故、蓋希律曾娶之為妻、約翰諫曰、爾納弟妻、非宜也、故希羅底憾約翰、欲殺之而不得、蓋希律知約翰為人義且聖、故畏而護之、聞其言多所遵行、且喜聽其訓、適遇希律誕辰、希律設筵、宴諸大夫、千夫長、及迦利利尊者、希羅底之女入而舞、希律與同席者皆喜、王謂女曰、隨爾所欲以求、我必予爾、又誓曰、凡爾所求、即我國之半、我亦予爾、女退、問母曰、我當何求、母曰、求施洗約翰之首、女遂入見王、請曰、我欲爾以施洗約翰之首、盛於盤、即時賜我、王甚憂、奈已誓、又因同席者在、不欲推諉、遂遣卒、命取約翰首、卒往、斬之於獄、盛首於盤、攜而予女、女以予母、

彼將以以利亞之神志才能、為主前驅、使為父者心慈其子、背逆者慕義人智慧、為主備歸誠之民、

有何先知而爾祖不窘逐之乎、預言義者將至之人、爾祖殺之、此義者、今爾已賣而殺之、

分封之王希律、因其弟腓立妻希羅底事、及所行諸惡、見責於約翰、遂加增一惡、囚約翰於獄、○
