耶穌到了該撒利亞腓立比的區域，就問他的門徒說：『人說人子是誰？』他們說：『有人說是施洗者約翰；另有人說是以利亞；又另有人說是耶利米，或是神言人中的一位。』耶穌對他們說：『但你們呢，你們說我是誰？』西門彼得回答說：『你是基督上帝所膏立者、永活上帝的兒子。』耶穌回答他說：『西門巴約拿，你有福啊，因為不是肉與血啓示了你，乃是我在天上的父啓示了你。我還告訴你，你是石頭彼得；在這磐石上我要建立我的教會，陰間的門戶必沒有力量勝過她。我要將天國的鑰匙給你；凡你在地上禁止的，在天上也必被禁止；凡你在地上准許的，在天上也必蒙准許。』就警告門徒不要對人說他是上帝所膏立的。
