耶穌出見芸芸眾生、如無牧之羊群、惻然憫之、乃多方教導。日暮、門徒進曰：『荒郊時晏、請遣眾散、自往四鄉市食。』耶穌曰：『爾當食之。』門徒曰：『豈欲吾人購餅二十金以食之乎？』耶穌曰：『先視存餅。』既悉、報曰：『餅五枚、魚二尾而已。』耶穌諭徒令眾成列、席草而坐、眾如命、有百人為一列者、有五十人者、坐定、耶穌持餅與魚、仰天祝福、分餅授徒置眾前、魚亦然：眾食且飽、拾餅屑殘魚盈十二筐；食者數約五千。
