And when he had called all the people[ unto him], he said unto them, Hearken unto me every one[ of you], and understand:

Then he called the crowd again and said to them,“ Listen to me, everyone, and understand.

He called all the multitude to himself, and said to them,“ Hear me, all of you, and understand.

Then Jesus called to the crowd to come and hear.“ Listen,” he said,“ and try to understand.

And he said,“ Yes, go, and say to this people,‘ Listen carefully, but do not understand. Watch closely, but learn nothing.’

Then Jesus turned to the crowd and said,“ When you see clouds beginning to form in the west, you say,‘ Here comes a shower.’ And you are right.When the south wind blows, you say,‘ Today will be a scorcher.’ And it is.You fools! You know how to interpret the weather signs of the earth and sky, but you don’t know how to interpret the present times.“ Why can’t you decide for yourselves what is right?

Then Elijah stood in front of them and said,“ How much longer will you waver, hobbling between two opinions? If the Lord is God, follow him! But if Baal is God, then follow him!” But the people were completely silent.

You simple people, use good judgment. You foolish people, show some understanding.

Philip ran over and heard the man reading from the prophet Isaiah. Philip asked,“ Do you understand what you are reading?”

Listen to this, all you people! Pay attention, everyone in the world!High and low, rich and poor— listen!

But Micaiah replied,“ If you return safely, it will mean that the Lord has not spoken through me!” Then he added to those standing around,“ Everyone mark my words!”

Think again, you fools! When will you finally catch on?

Then, with the crowds listening, he turned to his disciples and said,“ Beware of these teachers of religious law! For they like to parade around in flowing robes and love to receive respectful greetings as they walk in the marketplaces. And how they love the seats of honor in the synagogues and the head table at banquets.Yet they shamelessly cheat widows out of their property and then pretend to be pious by making long prayers in public. Because of this, they will be severely punished.”

Meanwhile, the crowds grew until thousands were milling about and stepping on each other. Jesus turned first to his disciples and warned them,“ Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees— their hypocrisy.
