for they still didn’t understand the significance of the miracle of the loaves. Their hearts were too hard to take it in.

Jesus knew what they were saying, so he said,“ Why are you arguing about having no bread? Don’t you know or understand even yet? Are your hearts too hard to take it in?‘ You have eyes— can’t you see? You have ears— can’t you hear?’ Don’t you remember anything at all?When I fed the 5,000 with five loaves of bread, how many baskets of leftovers did you pick up afterward?”“ Twelve,” they said.“ And when I fed the 4,000 with seven loaves, how many large baskets of leftovers did you pick up?”“ Seven,” they said.“ Don’t you understand yet?” he asked them.

Still later he appeared to the eleven disciples as they were eating together. He rebuked them for their stubborn unbelief because they refused to believe those who had seen him after he had been raised from the dead.

Lord, why have you allowed us to turn from your path? Why have you given us stubborn hearts so we no longer fear you? Return and help us, for we are your servants, the tribes that are your special possession.

He looked around at them angrily and was deeply saddened by their hard hearts. Then he said to the man,“ Hold out your hand.” So the man held out his hand, and it was restored!

Then Jesus said to them,“ You foolish people! You find it so hard to believe all that the prophets wrote in the Scriptures.

“ Don’t you understand either?” he asked.“ Can’t you see that the food you put into your body cannot defile you?

Don’t you understand even yet? Don’t you remember the 5,000 I fed with five loaves, and the baskets of leftovers you picked up?Or the 4,000 I fed with seven loaves, and the large baskets of leftovers you picked up?Why can’t you understand that I’m not talking about bread? So again I say,‘ Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.’”

So this is the situation: Most of the people of Israel have not found the favor of God they are looking for so earnestly. A few have— the ones God has chosen— but the hearts of the rest were hardened.
