Others said,“ He is Elijah.” And still others claimed,“ He is a prophet, like one of the prophets of long ago.”

The crowds were saying,“ This is the prophet Jesus from Nazareth in Galilee.”

They answered him,“ John the Baptist; others, Elijah; still others, one of the prophets.”

Look, I am going to send you the prophet Elijah before the great and terrible day of the LORD comes.

They replied,“ Some say John the Baptist; others, Elijah; still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”

some that Elijah had appeared, and others that one of the ancient prophets had risen.

“ What then?” they asked him.“ Are you Elijah?”“ I am not,” he said.“ Are you the Prophet?”“ No,” he answered.

And he will go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of fathers to their children, and the disobedient to the understanding of the righteous, to make ready for the Lord a prepared people.”

Again they asked the blind man,“ What do you say about him, since he opened your eyes?”“ He’s a prophet,” he said.

So they asked him,“ Why then do you baptize if you aren’t the Messiah, or Elijah, or the Prophet?”

So the disciples asked him,“ Why then do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?”“ Elijah is coming and will restore everything,” he replied.

Then fear came over everyone, and they glorified God, saying,“ A great prophet has risen among us,” and“ God has visited his people.”

When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself,“ This man, if he were a prophet, would know who and what kind of woman this is who is touching him— she’s a sinner!”

When the people saw the sign he had done, they said,“ This truly is the Prophet who is to come into the world.”

When some of those standing there heard this, they said,“ See, he’s calling for Elijah.”Someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, fixed it on a stick, offered him a drink, and said,“ Let’s see if Elijah comes to take him down.”

Moses said: The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your brothers. You must listen to everything he tells you.And everyone who does not listen to that prophet will be completely cut off from the people.

“ Elijah does come first and restores all things,” he replied.“ Why then is it written that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be treated with contempt?But I tell you that Elijah has come, and they did whatever they pleased to him, just as it is written about him.”

When some from the crowd heard these words, they said,“ This truly is the Prophet.”
