But she could not,for Herod feared John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and he kept him safe. When he heard him, he was greatly perplexed, and yet he heard him gladly.But an opportunity came when Herod on his birthday gave a banquet for his nobles and military commanders and the leading men of Galilee.For when Herodias’s daughter came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his guests. And the king said to the girl,“ Ask me for whatever you wish, and I will give it to you.”And he vowed to her,“ Whatever you ask me, I will give you, up to half of my kingdom.”And she went out and said to her mother,“ For what should I ask?” And she said,“ The head of John the Baptist.”And she came in immediately with haste to the king and asked, saying,“ I want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter.”And the king was exceedingly sorry, but because of his oaths and his guests he did not want to break his word to her.And immediately the king sent an executioner with orders to bring John’s head. He went and beheaded him in the prisonand brought his head on a platter and gave it to the girl, and the girl gave it to her mother.When his disciples heard of it, they came and took his body and laid it in a tomb.

But he went out and began to talk freely about it, and to spread the news, so that Jesus could no longer openly enter a town, but was out in desolate places, and people were coming to him from every quarter.

For not only has the word of the Lord sounded forth from you in Macedonia and Achaia, but your faith in God has gone forth everywhere, so that we need not say anything.

In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene,

And when he learned that he belonged to Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent him over to Herod, who was himself in Jerusalem at that time.When Herod saw Jesus, he was very glad, for he had long desired to see him, because he had heard about him, and he was hoping to see some sign done by him.So he questioned him at some length, but he made no answer.The chief priests and the scribes stood by, vehemently accusing him.And Herod with his soldiers treated him with contempt and mocked him. Then, arraying him in splendid clothing, he sent him back to Pilate.And Herod and Pilate became friends with each other that very day, for before this they had been at enmity with each other.

And they told him,“ John the Baptist; and others say, Elijah; and others, one of the prophets.”

In Jerusalem he made machines, invented by skillful men, to be on the towers and the corners, to shoot arrows and great stones. And his fame spread far, for he was marvelously helped, till he was strong.

At that very hour some Pharisees came and said to him,“ Get away from here, for Herod wants to kill you.”

The Ammonites paid tribute to Uzziah, and his fame spread even to the border of Egypt, for he became very strong.

And at once his fame spread everywhere throughout all the surrounding region of Galilee.

But they went away and spread his fame through all that district.

At that time Herod the tetrarch heard about the fame of Jesus,and he said to his servants,“ This is John the Baptist. He has been raised from the dead; that is why these miraculous powers are at work in him.”For Herod had seized John and bound him and put him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife,because John had been saying to him,“ It is not lawful for you to have her.”And though he wanted to put him to death, he feared the people, because they held him to be a prophet.But when Herod’s birthday came, the daughter of Herodias danced before the company and pleased Herod,so that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she might ask.Prompted by her mother, she said,“ Give me the head of John the Baptist here on a platter.”And the king was sorry, but because of his oaths and his guests he commanded it to be given.He sent and had John beheaded in the prison,and his head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, and she brought it to her mother.And his disciples came and took the body and buried it, and they went and told Jesus.
