Then Jesus asked them,“ Which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to kill?” But they remained silent.

Then Jesus asked them,“ What does the Law say we should do on the Sabbath day? Should we do good? Or should we do evil? Should we save life? Or should we kill?” But no one answered.

And he said to them,“ Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do harm, to save life or to kill?” But they were silent.

Then he turned to his critics and asked,“ Does the law permit good deeds on the Sabbath, or is it a day for doing evil? Is this a day to save life or to destroy it?” But they wouldn’t answer him.

Then he said to them,“ Is it lawful to do good on the Sabbath or to do evil, to save life or to kill?” But they were silent.

耶穌對他們說：“我問你們：在安息日哪一樣是可以作的呢：作好事還是壞事？救命還是害命？”

會堂裡有一個人，他的一隻手枯乾了。有人問耶穌：“在安息日治病，可以嗎？”目的是要控告耶穌。耶穌回答：“你們當中有哪一個，他僅有的一隻羊在安息日跌進坑裡，會不把羊抓住拉上來呢？人比羊貴重得多了！所以，在安息日行善是可以的。”

在安息日，耶穌進了一個法利賽人領袖的家裡吃飯，眾人都在窺探他。正好在他面前有一個患水臌病的人；耶穌對律法師和法利賽人說：“在安息日治病，可以不可以呢？”他們卻不出聲。耶穌扶著病人，治好他，叫他走了，就對他們說：“你們中間誰的兒子或牛在安息日掉在井裡，不立刻把他拉上來呢？”

耶穌又告訴他們：“安息日是為人設立的，人並不是為安息日設立的。這樣，人子也是安息日的主。”

耶穌用雙手按在她身上，她立刻直起腰來，頌讚神。會堂的主管，因為耶穌在安息日治病，就氣忿忿地對群眾說：“有六天是應當作工的，你們可以在這六天裡來求醫，但在安息日卻不可以。”主說：“偽君子啊，你們哪一個人在安息日，不從槽那裡解開牛、驢，牽去喝水呢？何況這個女人是亞伯拉罕的後裔，已經被撒但捆綁了十八年，不應當在安息日解開她的捆綁嗎？”他說完了這些話，那些與他為敵的人都慚愧；群眾卻都因他所行一切榮耀的事歡喜。

門徒一聲不響，因為他們在路上彼此爭論誰為大。

我喜愛憐恤，不喜愛祭祀；我喜愛人認識神的知識，勝過人獻的燔祭。
