John’s disciples and the Pharisees were going without eating. Some people came to Jesus. They said to him,“ John’s disciples are fasting. The disciples of the Pharisees are also fasting. But your disciples are not. Why aren’t they?”

Now John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting. And people came and said to him,“ Why do John’s disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast?”

Once when John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting, some people came to Jesus and asked,“ Why don’t your disciples fast like John’s disciples and the Pharisees do?”

John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting; and they* came and* said to Him,“ Why do John’s disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but Your disciples do not fast?”

The disciples of John and of the Pharisees were fasting. Then they came and said to Him,“ Why do the disciples of John and of the Pharisees fast, but Your disciples do not fast?”

And John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting: and they come and say unto him, Why do John’s disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but thy disciples fast not?

Now John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting. People came and asked Him,“ Why do John’s disciples and the Pharisees’ disciples fast, but Your disciples do not fast?”

And the disciples of John and of the Pharisees used to fast: and they come and say unto him, Why do the disciples of John and of the Pharisees fast, but thy disciples fast not?

Now John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting. So they came to Jesus and said,“ Why do the disciples of John and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but your disciples don’t fast?”

John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting, and they came and asked him,“ Why do John’s disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but your disciples don’t fast?”

I fast twice a week; I give a tenth of everything I get.’

“ Whenever you fast, don’t be gloomy like the hypocrites. For they disfigure their faces so that their fasting is obvious to people. Truly I tell you, they have their reward.

so that your fasting isn’t obvious to others but to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

Then John’s disciples came to him, saying,“ Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but your disciples do not fast?”Jesus said to them,“ Can the wedding guests be sad while the groom is with them? The time will come when the groom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast.No one patches an old garment with unshrunk cloth, because the patch pulls away from the garment and makes the tear worse.And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the skins burst, the wine spills out, and the skins are ruined. No, they put new wine into fresh wineskins, and both are preserved.”

Then they said to him,“ John’s disciples fast often and say prayers, and those of the Pharisees do the same, but yours eat and drink.”Jesus said to them,“ You can’t make the wedding guests fast while the groom is with them, can you?But the time will come when the groom will be taken away from them— then they will fast in those days.”He also told them a parable:“ No one tears a patch from a new garment and puts it on an old garment. Otherwise, not only will he tear the new, but also the piece from the new garment will not match the old.And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the new wine will burst the skins, it will spill, and the skins will be ruined.No, new wine is put into fresh wineskins.And no one, after drinking old wine, wants new, because he says,‘ The old is better.’”

They do everything to be seen by others: They enlarge their phylacteries and lengthen their tassels.

Since they are ignorant of the righteousness of God and attempted to establish their own righteousness, they have not submitted to God’s righteousness.
