於是大大地爭吵起來；有幾個法利賽派的文士站起來爭辯說：「我們看不出這人有甚麼錯處；說不定有鬼魂或者天使對他說過話呢！」

法利賽人獨自站着，自言自語地禱告說：『上帝啊，我感謝你，我不像別人勒索、不義、姦淫，也不像這個稅吏。

眾人看見，都私下議論說：「他竟然到罪人家裏去住宿。」

且對人說：『你站開吧！不要挨近我，因為我對你來說太神聖了。』這些人惹我鼻中冒煙，如終日燃燒的火。

法利賽人和文士私下議論說：「這個人接納罪人，又同他們吃飯。」耶穌就用比喻對他們說：「你們中間誰有一百隻羊，失去其中的一隻，不把這九十九隻留在曠野，去找那失去的羊，直到找着呢？找到了，他就歡歡喜喜地把羊扛在肩上。他回到家裏，請朋友和鄰舍來，對他們說：『你們和我一同歡喜吧，我失去的羊已經找到了！』我告訴你們，一個罪人悔改，在天上也要這樣為他歡喜，比為九十九個不用悔改的義人歡喜還大呢！」

法利賽人看見，就對耶穌的門徒說：「你們的老師為甚麼與稅吏和罪人一同吃飯呢？」

屬靈的人能看透萬事，卻沒有一人能看透他。

你們要仔細想想這位忍受了罪人如此頂撞的耶穌，你們就不致心灰意懶了。

「這個人為甚麼這樣說呢？他說褻瀆的話了。除了上帝一位之外，誰能赦罪呢？」

人子來是要尋找和拯救失喪的人。」

他若是不聽他們，就去告訴教會；若是不聽教會，就把他看作外邦人和稅吏。
