眾人大聲喧嚷，有幾個法利賽派的律法教師站起來爭辯說：「我們找不出這人有什麼錯處，也許真的有靈或天使跟他說過話。」

法利賽人站在那裡自言自語地禱告說，『上帝啊！我感謝你，因為我不像別人那樣勒索、不義、通姦，也不像這稅吏。

百姓見狀，都埋怨說：「祂怎麼到一個罪人家裡作客？」

還對人說，『站遠點，別挨近我，因為我比你聖潔！』我被這些人氣得鼻孔冒煙，整天怒火難息。

法利賽人和律法教師埋怨說：「這個人竟和罪人來往，還跟他們一起吃飯。」耶穌給他們講了一個比喻：「如果你們有人有一百隻羊，走失了一隻，難道他不暫時把那九十九隻留在草場上，去找那隻迷失的羊，一直到找著為止嗎？他找到後，會歡歡喜喜地把那隻羊扛回家，並邀來朋友鄰居，說，『我走失的羊找到了，來和我一同慶祝吧！』我告訴你們，同樣，一個罪人悔改，在天上也要這樣為他歡喜，甚至比有九十九個不用悔改的義人還歡喜。

法利賽人看見了，就質問耶穌的門徒：「你們的老師為何跟稅吏和罪人一起吃飯？」

屬靈的人能夠參透萬事，但沒有人能參透他。

你們要思想忍受罪人如此頂撞的主，免得疲倦灰心。

「這是什麼話？簡直是褻瀆上帝！除了上帝之外，誰能赦罪呢？」

人子來是要尋找和拯救迷失的人。」

如果他仍然不聽，就應當告訴教會。如果他連教會也不聽，就把他看作異教徒或稅吏。
