Again and again they struck him on the head with a staff and spit on him. Falling on their knees, they paid homage to him.

so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth,

Those who sit in the gate talk about me, And songs of mockery by those habitually drunk are about me.

And Herod, together with his soldiers, treated Him with contempt and mocked Him, dressing Him in a brightly shining robe, and sent Him back to Pilate.

But as for you, why do you judge your brother or sister? Or you as well, why do you regard your brother or sister with contempt? For we will all appear before the judgment seat of God.For it is written:“ As I live, says the Lord, to Me every knee will bow, And every tongue will give praise to God.”

But at my stumbling they rejoiced and gathered themselves together; The afflicted people whom I did not know gathered together against me, They slandered me without ceasing.Like godless jesters at a feast, They gnashed at me with their teeth.Lord, how long will You look on? Rescue my soul from their ravages, My only life from the lions.

You know my disgrace, my shame, and my dishonor; All my enemies are known to You.Disgrace has broken my heart, and I am so sick. And I waited for sympathy, but there was none; And for comforters, but I found none.

I gave My back to those who strike Me, And My cheeks to those who pull out My beard; I did not hide My face from insults and spitting.

But I am a worm and not a person, A disgrace of mankind and despised by the people.All who see me deride me; They sneer, they shake their heads, saying,

And they will mock Him and spit on Him, and flog Him and kill Him; and three days later He will rise from the dead.”

Worthless fellows, even those without a name, They were cast out from the land.“ And now I have become their taunt, And I have become a byword to them.They loathe me and stand aloof from me, And they do not refrain from spitting in my face.Because He has undone my bowstring and afflicted me, They have cast off the bridle before me.On the right hand their mob arises; They push aside my feet and pile up their ways of destruction against me.

When Abraham’s servant heard their words, he bowed himself to the ground before the Lord.

Just as many were appalled at you, My people, So His appearance was marred beyond that of a man, And His form beyond the sons of mankind.

But what is the divine response to him?“ I have kept for Myself seven thousand men who have not bowed the knee to Baal.”

looking only at Jesus, the originator and perfecter of the faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.For consider Him who has endured such hostility by sinners against Himself, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.

I have sworn by Myself; The word has gone out from My mouth in righteousness And will not turn back, That to Me every knee will bow, every tongue will swear allegiance.

So then, let us go out to Him outside the camp, bearing His reproach.

For He will be handed over to the Gentiles, and will be ridiculed, and abused, and spit upon,and after they have flogged Him, they will kill Him; and on the third day He will rise.”

All the king’s servants who were at the king’s gate bowed down and paid homage to Haman; for so the king had commanded regarding him. But Mordecai neither bowed down nor paid homage.Then the king’s servants who were at the king’s gate said to Mordecai,“ Why are you violating the king’s command?”Now it was when they had spoken daily to him and he would not listen to them, that they told Haman to see whether Mordecai’s reason would stand; for he had told them that he was a Jew.When Haman saw that Mordecai neither bowed down nor paid homage to him, Haman was filled with rage.

This is what the Lord, the Redeemer of Israel and its Holy One, Says to the despised One, To the One abhorred by the nation, To the Servant of rulers:“ Kings will see and arise, Princes will also bow down, Because of the Lord who is faithful, the Holy One of Israel who has chosen You.”

The men who were holding Jesus in custody began mocking Him and beating Him,

Yet I will leave seven thousand in Israel, all the knees that have not bowed to Baal and every mouth that has not kissed him.”

He was despised and abandoned by men, A man of great pain and familiar with sickness; And like one from whom people hide their faces, He was despised, and we had no regard for Him.However, it was our sicknesses that He Himself bore, And our pains that He carried; Yet we ourselves assumed that He had been afflicted, Struck down by God, and humiliated.But He was pierced for our offenses, He was crushed for our wrongdoings; The punishment for our well being was laid upon Him, And by His wounds we are healed.
