At that he began to curse, and he swore with an oath,“ I do not know the man!” At that moment a rooster crowed.Then Peter remembered what Jesus had said:“ Before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.” And he went outside and wept bitterly.

Then you will remember your evil behavior and your deeds which were not good; you will loathe yourselves on account of your sins and your abominable deeds.

Their survivors will escape to the mountains and become like doves of the valleys; all of them will moan– each one for his iniquity.

We are ashamed and humiliated because of the disgraceful things we did previously.’Indeed, the people of Israel are my dear children. They are the children I take delight in. For even though I must often rebuke them, I still remember them with fondness. So I am deeply moved with pity for them and will surely have compassion on them. I, the LORD, affirm it!

But Peter said,“ Man, I don’t know what you’re talking about!” At that moment, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed.

For sadness as intended by God produces a repentance that leads to salvation, leaving no regret, but worldly sadness brings about death.

Then you will remember, be ashamed, and remain silent when I make atonement for all you have done, declares the sovereign LORD.’”
