彼得卻否認說：“我不知道，也不明白你在說甚麼！”他就走出去，到了前院，雞就叫了（有些抄本無“雞就叫了”一句）。

我思想我所行的道路，就轉回腳步歸向你的法度。我趕快謹守你的命令，不敢耽延。

彼得就發咒起誓說：“我不認識那一個人。”立刻雞就叫了。彼得想起耶穌所說的話：“雞叫以前，你會三次不認我”，他就出去痛哭。

那時，你們必想起你們的惡行和不好的作為，就必因你們的罪孽和可憎惡的事厭惡自己。

他們中間逃脫的，必因自己的罪孽在山上發出哀聲，像谷中的鴿子哀鳴一樣。

大衛數點了人民以後，良心一直不安，於是對耶和華說：“我作了這事，犯了大罪。耶和華啊！現在求你除去你僕人的罪孽，因為我作了非常糊塗的事！”

他醒悟過來，說：‘我父親有那麼多雇工，又有豐富的食物，我卻要在這裡餓死嗎？我要起來，到我父親那裡去，對他說：爸爸，我得罪了天，也得罪了你，不配再稱為你的兒子，把我當作一個雇工吧！’

他就出去痛哭。

耶穌對他說：“我實在告訴你，今天晚上雞叫以前，你會三次不認我。”

“我清楚聽見以法蓮為自己哀歎，說：‘你管教了我，我像一頭不馴服的牛犢受管教；求你使我回轉，我就得以回轉，因為你是耶和華我的神。我回轉以後，就深深悔悟；我醒覺以後，就拍腿悔恨。因為我承受年幼時的恥辱，我感到羞恥和慚愧。’以法蓮是我親愛的兒子嗎？是我喜悅的孩子嗎？每逢我說話攻擊他，我必再次記念他。因此，我的心戀慕他；我必定憐憫他。”這是耶和華的宣告。

彼得說：“你這個人，我不知道你說的是甚麼！”他還在說話的時候，雞就叫了。

因為依照神的意思而有的憂傷，可以生出沒有懊悔的悔改，以致得救；世俗的憂傷卻會招致死亡。

好使你在我赦免你所行的一切時，就會回想，自覺慚愧，並且因你所受的羞辱不再開口。這是主耶和華的宣告。’”
