彼得却否认说：“我不知道，也不明白你在说什么！”他就走出去，到了前院，鸡就叫了（有些抄本无“鸡就叫了”一句）。

我思想我所行的道路，就转回脚步归向你的法度。我赶快谨守你的命令，不敢耽延。

彼得就发咒起誓说：“我不认识那一个人。”立刻鸡就叫了。彼得想起耶稣所说的话：“鸡叫以前，你会三次不认我”，他就出去痛哭。

那时，你们必想起你们的恶行和不好的作为，就必因你们的罪孽和可憎恶的事厌恶自己。

他们中间逃脱的，必因自己的罪孽在山上发出哀声，像谷中的鸽子哀鸣一样。

大卫数点了人民以后，良心一直不安，于是对耶和华说：“我作了这事，犯了大罪。耶和华啊！现在求你除去你仆人的罪孽，因为我作了非常糊涂的事！”

他醒悟过来，说：‘我父亲有那么多雇工，又有丰富的食物，我却要在这里饿死吗？我要起来，到我父亲那里去，对他说：爸爸，我得罪了天，也得罪了你，不配再称为你的儿子，把我当作一个雇工吧！’

他就出去痛哭。

耶稣对他说：“我实在告诉你，今天晚上鸡叫以前，你会三次不认我。”

“我清楚听见以法莲为自己哀叹，说：‘你管教了我，我像一头不驯服的牛犊受管教；求你使我回转，我就得以回转，因为你是耶和华我的神。我回转以后，就深深悔悟；我醒觉以后，就拍腿悔恨。因为我承受年幼时的耻辱，我感到羞耻和惭愧。’以法莲是我亲爱的儿子吗？是我喜悦的孩子吗？每逢我说话攻击他，我必再次记念他。因此，我的心恋慕他；我必定怜悯他。”这是耶和华的宣告。

彼得说：“你这个人，我不知道你说的是什么！”他还在说话的时候，鸡就叫了。

因为依照神的意思而有的忧伤，可以生出没有懊悔的悔改，以致得救；世俗的忧伤却会招致死亡。

好使你在我赦免你所行的一切时，就会回想，自觉惭愧，并且因你所受的羞辱不再开口。这是主耶和华的宣告。’”
